Hi all, well with Christmas just around the corner, I thought I would talk my wife into getting me a OBDII detector. Anyone have any expreriance with a couple different detectors and would recomend their fav. I suppose a good option would to be able to scan all new cars instead of just Subaru. I don't really know anything about them, like can you scan OBD I vehicles? Besides the WRX, I have a Nissan, Cherokee, and a Jeep CJ7 and would like to be able to use it for 3 of the 4 vehicles. Well if anyone has any imput it would be great.
There are a number of different brands and types of units on the market. Any generic OBDII scanner should be capable of reading information from any '96-up OBDII vehicle, although there are some exceptions where cheaper units may not be able to connect to certain vehicles. Also some units are only capable of reading/clearing codes, while others have the capability to monitor live sensor data from the ECU which is useful for troubleshooting.
If you have several vehicles and some are domestic OBDI, you should look into a scanner that is capable of scanning both OBDI and II. One such unit, which I have personal experience with, is the AutoXray. You can check out their product line at www.autoxray.com
You can get an OBDII scanner with additional functionality for whatever OBDI vehicles you need- GM, Ford, Chrysler or all 3.
Note that if you have a foreign vehicle that is OBDI you won't be easily able to get a scanner for it. In this case your only option may be a very expensive professional unit such as a Snap-On which has modules available for all manufacturers.
