New To Subarus, WTB GC8
Hey, I'm new and this is my first post in this forum. I'm currently car shopping for a 98-01 Subaru Impreza RS. Tomarrow or Today, seeing that its 1:30am of 8/19, I will be checking out a 99 impreza RS. I don't know much about these cars because I've been a honda driver for my past 2 cars so any info on these years of the GC8 Imprezas would be nice. I'm looking for info like if theses years have a tranny problem like the newer WRXs or anything like that. I know, I'm not new to forums, use a search but I just wanted to open my first thread here introducing myself as I purchase look for a car.
Do you guys think a 99 impreza RS w/ 29,000mi, clean title, 2nd owner, clean exterior, worn/torn interior car is worth 10k? Cause I think thats what I'll be offering him or maybe a little lower cause it doesnt come with a headunit or nothing. Dont flame, I KBBed it and it says $9,930.
Well I probably wont be getting any comments or feedback until after my visit with this car but I'm not going to buy it at the spot. This forum doesnt have smileys? What kind of forum is this? LoL jk

You'll want to do a carfax or get the vin and check it with Subaru and make sure the head gasket recall was done- it was'nt really a head gasket recall, but they did a coolant treatment that was supposed to prevent gasket failure. If it's been done and the head gaskets blow (which they are very know to do) then you're covered up to 100K miles. If not, then you're on your own and it's only a matter of time.
As for the drive line, if it's been driven with a degree of responsibility then there should'nt be any issues. The car is not that powerful to break gearboxes. You just can shift them like an animal. Uprated clutches (like ACT) have a tendency to take gearboxes out. But I think that's probably because people beat the daylights out of them.
My 99 has fewer options for an intake upgrade because of the MAF sensor, but I don't care as I find the stock airbox just fine.
Good luck when you check it out! Hope it's a good one!

Ok thanks for your reply and I just got back from looking at the car.
Man, I love that car. Maybe its just I never driven one before but other then that damn I got to get one. The motor sounds pretty damn quiet cause I started the car and barely heard a peep out of it.
The only problem is that it won't pass smog as 29,000 miles which is weird cause it's not that old. Drives fine and smooth. Oh for these year cars are the clutch suppose to be long or short? I think his is short cause I grinded a little when I didnt press the clutch to the floor. I've carfaxed it already and it said it failed smog test 2 times and today was number 3 and I was there when he smoged it. He looked pretty shocked that it didn't pass smog unless he's a great actor. He said he was going to stop by a subaru dealer and see what was wrong since we couldn't read Car Code. Kinda makes me iffy about this cause why would it not pass smog after 29,00mi? and why is he selling it after 4 months of driving it? He said he reasons were because he needed the money to finance a project but who knows maybe theres a problem with the car. I need feedback cause I need a car.
