Locked in "Park"

When I started my '02 Forester yesterday morning, I couldn't shift out of "park."
I checked the owner's manual and found it addresses this development with instructions on how to disable the gearshift lockout mechanism and an admonition to drive directly to a Subaru service center for repair.
Anyone have experience with this? Is this indicative of one specific problem or a safety feature that activates for any of a variety of faults?
I plan to take it in for service first thing tomorrow, but wondered whether I am looking at a major repair or a minor glitch.

if you are still within warranty, (ie: 60k miles powertrain) then you have no worries. If you are over, see if there is a recall or service bulleten. This is pretty major, and if it's addressed in the manual, demand why it wasn't fixed before hand?

I own a 5mt, so I wouldn't know!

Still in "park"
The car has 73,000 miles on the odometer - I'm the second owner and bought it at about 56k.
And it was parked on the flat - in the garage.
Omitted detail: I started the engine and, when I went to shift into reverse, it died. On the next startup attempt, I found I was locked in park.
