How long does a WRX engine and tranny last? I want to buy one, but can only afford one reaching 100K in miles.

Anything I should definitely have checked, changed or redone by then?

I see trades come in ALL the time after the 105K timing belt change. CHANGE OIL AS A RELIGION ~ USE A GOOD SYNTH... and smoke the BMW's ;-)

 

I have 93000+ miles on my '02 WRX with no problems. Just be nice to the tranny (ie no 7000k clutch dumps), and as NW OBS stated, change your oil on time-everytime. Use some synthetic oil, I use Mobile 1.

 

If on were to be using mobil 1 synthetic, can the oil change intervals be increased to 5k?

 

Yes. The factory maintenance schedule for engine oil and filter replacement is every 7.5 months or 7500 miles after the initial 3-month/3000-mile oil and filter change.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil and change it out every 5000 miles (sometimes a little earlier). If you want to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, that's perfectly fine, albeit a little more expensive. Just keep an eye on the dipstick if you opt for a longer interval - if oil consumption increases, the level may drop lower than you'd like before your next oil change.
