Ken, are you saying that there is indeed a valid reason to double-clutch on the WRX, particularly in first gear? I have heard complaints from people about how difficult it is to downshift into first if still rolling at a decent rate of speed. Would double-clutching solve this? I myself don't have an manual cage at the moment so I can't just go out and try it and answer my own question.
yep, that's exactly what i'm saying.

the syncros on 1st gear are pretty weak. some people have more problems than others... it seems that there's a lot of leeway in terms of the build tolerance of the MT5. synchros do wear out, so the problem generally just gets worse. some folks even experience grinding while at a complete stop, and/or in other gears besides 1st (4th comes to mind).

replacing the tranny fluid with one that's more "slippery" can make the problem worse, since the synchros need some friction to do their jobs.

when i first flushed my tranny with mobil 1 synthetic, i did find more grinding of first gear. i liked the other aspects of the fluid, namely much less viscous while cold, and a much easier shift action, so i didn't want to go back to the OEM dino fluid. after reading up on the web, i drained some of the mobil 1 and replaced it with pennzoil synchromesh fluid, a special performance fluid developed for GM transmissions especially for improved synchro action. i found the best blend to be about 60/40 mobil 1/synchromesh. with that in the tranny, i do not have any problems getting into first from stopped up to about 5 mph. above that, up to 15mph, i can get it into first but only slowly, with gentle pressure at the shift gate for about 5 seconds or so. if you're attentive you can hear the synchro spin up as you keep pressure on the shifter. above 15mph my best bet is to double clutch, blipping the throttle in neutral.

when i'm feeling bored i fool around double clutching... i figure it's good practice for when i get that dog box.

okay I just read the entire post and only have one thing to say, can't you guys get along. Anyway thats beside my point, you guys say that the warranty says that if the car is stock and has not been raced that they should repair it, this is true but if you read up on the magnuss and moss act thru SEMA's website, it states that as a consumer you have the right to cutsomize your car however you see fit so long as you comply with EPA regulations. If you do break your car the dealership has to prove that what you changed did in fact cause that part failure. I had the same problem you all did with my trans around 30,000 miles. It took months for the dealership to fix it but they finally did after threatening a lawsuit. Hope this helps if you guys ever have to fight the dealership.

you are the first person on here who thought that. I had the same power steering thing happen to mine. Better hope they fix it under warranty they didn't mine and it cost me around 600.

first of all - i have 2 subies- they rock. . . but 2 each his own i guess..

2nd- Food for Thought

putting aside legalities...lets try some reasoning. . . lets just say if subaru happens to put a warranty on a car stating that it has a bumper to bumper warranty. figureatively speaking the warranty covers everything subaru manufactured/installed on the car. now will the factory warranty cover performance "enhancing" parts that add horsepower etc.? will subaru guarantee their products integrity if the original make-up of the vehicle was altered? will their warranty have a "umbrella" protection/ actually put it this way- would you cover the costs?

LOL... that really had nothing to do with this thread but thats okay.... i' tired...

Don't get me wrong i love my car and everything about it. My screen name has nothing to do with the car itself. It has to do with the way Subaru as a company does business.

.......and those people have legitimate gripes. SOA has no excuse for denying a warranty in that case.

However, there have been several folks on these sites who claimed to be "innocent" of any wrong-doing, but after a little research they were found to be deceptive about relevant information (i.e. mods, abuse) or were blatantly untruthful. When people try to deceive their dealer and/or SOA, it certainly doesn't help those who have valid issues when they take their cars in for warranty work.

By the way, I'm not saying everyone that posts on these forums about a "legit" claim is a liar, but some folks need to use a little objectivity when considering this "issue" before they make blanket statements. Just consider that there may be more to the story than what you read.

I agree. There are a lot of guys all over this forum that claim that they never raced their car or dumped the clutch etc. but if you go through some of their previous posts in other threads you can see they are lying. These are the guys that make SOA deny legitimate claims by saying the car was abused.

Believe it or not, there are Subaru people that browse these sites for feedback, and when they read post after post of guys saying that "I beat this guy or I raced that guy" it skewes their overall view of the average Subaru buyer.

I do think that it is strange to see when people are told their warranty is denied due to racing. When I was last at a Subaru dealer, there was a Subaru backed and produced sign in the window that said "WRX, wanna race?" I also think they should stop advertising the 0-60 in 5.4 secs. If you have to "abuse" your car to replicate those numbers, they shouldn't advertise them.

My dealer defined transmission abuse this way: Any time you slip, dump, sidestep, shift faster than normal, miss-shift, or race the engine." If you can hit 0-60 in 5.4 seconds in a stock wrx without doing some of those things i will shut up.

Ohh yes, indeed I believe that "Subaru workers" browse these forums. I in fact have a short personal story; a little over a year ago, my clutch went on me on the highway, I had to go to my non-normal daeler.. got the clutch replaced at my expense since the car had like ~17k on it. I go to my usual dealer to complain about having to pay.. they said blah blah blah.. you should have called us to tow the car to us; meanwhile i had palces to go that day and things to do.. very busy schedule (used to work as an international business to business associate).

So anyway, I went to the closest dealership, got a loaner and dropped my car off.. long story short..the dealer i bought the car from.. never ever even pointed me to the service manager back then about my other problems either.. so i shut up, put up and started doing everything on the car myself.. even the goddamn cams.

Point of the story.. after I got pissed with my dealer for not helping me; I put a 'complaint letter' on the forums.. and jokingly put "i'm going to play a game of who put the ball bearing in the mufflers of the dealership" of course.. never doing anything nor would I ever have. I lost my job this past summer, begin searching, a month or so ago I see that the dealer I complained to needed a lot-rat. I go to apply. After I fill it out.. blah blah blah.. I get sat at a desk and bam theres my post complaint from over a friggin year ago.

Afterwards, indeed I felt like an ***; but after I spoke to legal counsel about it; it would be illegal for them to use that against me for the job, if in fact no harm ever came from it, let alone time limitations of personal statements (something to that effect, can't remember exact way the public defender's office stated it). However, apparently there was someone who had more experience/expertise/a better track record than I -- so no jobby poo for me. (Ah well, packing dumpsters of wood and sheetrock @ 20/hr is a bit better anyway).

Moral of the story -- on the internet, of course, nothing is safe.. I used to work for a company that supplied the government with such information that they could pinpoint where you were and why you were out of school in second grade in the 50s.. pretty scary ****.. but its out-there, in searchable database form for all credit card companies, credit agencies, law enforcement, etc. to see. Just too bad I didn't keep/make any friends there when I did work there.. some of that information could come in handy in life.

Enough of my rambling.. unless you have something nice to say, dont say it at all.. especially on the 'net, you will be tracked down, stripped, flogged and left for dead in a pit of antarctic hoola-skirt wearing polar bears who want nothing more than to use your hide as their doormat.

Cheers,
G
