Getting ready to buy 2.5RS
Just wondering some things...
The RS I'm buying is an '01 2dr 5spd silver. It has 56,000miles on it. What are some problems (Subaru specific) I should be looking for? This will be my first Suby (though I've been in love with them for the longest time... thanks to the WRC) and I just want to make sure I don't run into any problems. Thanks in advance!!

I dont know I have a 2001 2.5RS silver also. I paid $9,000 for it and it had 38,000 miles on it. It's an automatic but I couldn't pass up the price from the old lady, lol. But anyways uhhhhh o yeah if you hear like a tapping (sounds kinda like a diesel engine) when you start the car its probally not the tappers or whatever its just the 2.5L engine until it warms up. Get a Cobb intake though there AWSOME!!

Thanks for the input! I'm probably going to end up paying about 12,000 for a silver one if I get one right now. There are two silver one's I'm looking at. The $12,000 one has 56xxx miles on it, while the other one ($13500) has only 42xxx miles. I'm going to try and talk the 13,500 guy down to 12,500... OR 12,000... hahahah. I really want to get one and I'll remember your input! THANKS again!

problem areas:
Rear wheel bearings (there's a TSB about replacing the regular RS bearing races w/ stronger legacy ones), wornout bearings you will be able to hear while driving the car (either a tatatatata shaking sound, or a squeeling sound)...
Transmission, who knows how many 'launches' or hard shifts the former owner's done,
head gasket failure; sustained high-rpm operation, e.g. someone who frequently takes the car to a race track, causes the cylinder walls (open-deck design) to move slightly, causing wear & eventually failure of the head gasket.
unfortunately there's no tell-tail signs to looks for concerning a beaten/abused transmission, or a head gasket problem...

I bought an '01 sedan w/ 65k miles on it to get me around while my WRX is up on blocks. I've driven the **** out of it, normally shifting between 4500-6200rpm consistently, although I never 'launch' it.
I put some 17s with 225/45's on it with stock suspension, and I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm exacerbating the wear on the wheel hub bearings, but it isn't making a sound like PJ is describing. I am putting the 6 spokes back on, though.
It also doesn't like 87 octane. The amount of knock I'm getting isn't good, but pretty much disappears with 91. While there's no oil leaks nor burning, I'm starting to wonder if the HG is beginning to wear. I'm not a smart guy, but I'm putting 2 and 2 together. Age and miles taking their toll and I'm guessing the static compression ratio has increased.

I don't know to what extent our car differs, but my 03 RS has 106k miles and handles my lead foot with ease. Just don't dump the clutch.
Front driver side wheel bearing at 60K
Replaced tire at 80K
Changed all brake pads 85K
Bad left bank 02 sensor 100K
Catylitic converter went bad at 100K too
Rear driver side wheel bearing at 105K
Changed all corners. Rear shot at 105K
(changed them with Pro Kit and AGX's)
and the regular service
