DIY : Valve adjustment
Hi,
Has anyone here adjusted the valves on their Subaru?
I have a 99 Subaru Forester and according to the dealer I need a valve adjustment. They want $425 for the job and that doesn't even include a loaner vehicle. So, I will have to probably pay $30 on top of that in addition to the $75 for the initial diagnosis.
I have the service manual and it doesn't look terribly difficult. It could get messy though when you take the valve/rocker covers off.
In the service manual, however, it doesn't show any gasket between the valve/rocker covers and the engine. Is this correct? Wouldn't the oil start to leak?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks again,
Ken

I'm sure there must be a gasket between the cyl head and the rocker covers.
try Subaruparts.com
They have cool exploded views of the engine assemblies
or try Subarutechinfo.com
You can download more factory info there (at a cost)
I plan on doing my own valve adjust on my DOHC WRX motor.

I actually decided to take my car to the dealer for the $425 valve adjustment.
According to their invoice, the following
parts were used:
* 10 Rocker Cover washers
* 2 Rocker Cover gaskets
* 4 Spark Plug Pipe gaskets
My car is idling a lot better now and
the CEL hasn't gone on so their
intial diagnosis appears to have been
correctly.
Unfortunately, my car now makes a
clicking/tapping sound when going
from 1000-2000rpm.
I called the dealer and they said this
is normal right after a valve adjustment....
He says it should go away after a couple of hundred miles.
We'll see....
