Complete brake work on a 2000 Leg. Outback

I hope im posting this in the right forum. But i need some help, soon. My parents have a 2000 legacy outback, (as stated in the title) that needs a complete brake job. Pads and rotors all around. The dealership wanted something completely outragious, like $900!!! So i said screw it, i can do it for much cheaper. The problem is i have only worked on Hondas.

My question really is how difficult is it to do? are the Rotors pressed on to the hubs or are there any other things that would severely hinder my work here? On the Accord its bbasically, take off the wheel, take off the caliper, and then the rotor. Is there anythig tricky about doing this job? do i need any special tools?

Thanks in advance guys.

(and Mods, could you maybe move this to a more appropriate section if you find the need, thanks.)

This is the appropriate forum for the question. And yeah, you can tackle it, no big deal. Rotors are free-floating and the calipers are held on with the usual 2 bolts. Try www.scoobymods.com , there is a Legacy section, and even if there is nothing there, the Impreza brakes are the same, just different sizes for the most part.

next question. . . are there any sites explaining how to bleed the brakes on the Scooby? or should i continue with ym Honda knowledge?

one more thing. . .are the e brakes in the front on Subarus? I always thought that is was a rear brake thing. but i just read something saying the Saab 900 and Subarus are front whel ebraked?

ban suvs is correct and no the e-brake is on the rear-the rear rotor is a disc and drum type-the drum is for the e-brake-always adjust the rear ebrakes shoes thru the slot in the backing plate as per your service manual-then if need the cable is adjusted after if needed,my i ad that these repairs although costly at a dealer-are nothing to be taken lightly-well worth the money if not dont right and faulty repairs lead to unfortunate other damaages or accident.at least you get a timing belt out of it-lol

On our Scoobymods site it's best to do a search for what you are interested in. Many things, like the brakes, are similar enough across the line. Most of my brake info is in the GC8 section but will still help. Look at the STi 4 pot page too. As stated doing the brakes are pretty easy. To save even more money I suggest ordering the OEM parts you need on line. Look in the vendor section and you'll find a few places to order stuff.

Good luck.

thanks for the info guys. i did everything last sunday. it took about 2.5hrs to do the entire Subaru. not bad conscidering it was getting dark, and that was the first Subaru ive ever worked on. I dont drive the car on the daily, but from what ive been told, it stops on a dime. right now, my dad, brother, and I are about to go to the dealership to test drive WRX's. My dad wants to replace his 2.5RS. we conviced him the the STi would be too much car. it would be aweseom to thave at the house, but the seocnd the turbo would spool, he'd be on the brakes anyway. oh well, im off to go make the Salesman **** his pants. thanks again guys.

I would becasue i really like wagons. but he has his heart set on a Candy Apple Red Sedan. he has been taling about it since they came out a few years ago.
But the XT is the same motor right? isnt the Forester built on the Impreza body? what are the major differences between that and the WRX?

The XT has the same motor as the STi it's a 2.5L turbo. The XT has a smaller IC and the turbocharger is not the same as the STi either, it's the same as the WRX's. It's a detuned version of the STi. Lots of torque though

And yes it's on the Impreza platform:

Here is the C&D review:

just got back. i let my dad drive it, after all, he is paying for it. but i had my chance a few weeks ago. he said he liked it, but i know he didnt drive it like it should have been driven to get the full experience. I test drove a 04 Wagon and was drifting it all over the place, and redlining the motor with only 74 miles on it. i had the sales man double fisting the chicken strap as i was weaving at 115mph on the highway.
All i wanted to do was drive it, i had to make them think i was going to buy it though, so he called me like once a week for a while. I saw him today and gave him a big wave as we left, he def remembered me.

That was good though, i think he is going to get the WRX sedan. do you guys think having the boost gauge is worth getting.

Wow, that's not a nice way to treat a new motor. It should be broken in properly. You should be more considerate, someone will be buying that car

Here's a conflicting, yet interesting article revolving around motor break-in procedures. I just saw this for the first time the other day, but I'm sure others have read it.
