2.5rs or used WRX....
Hello, i am new to this forum and would like your opinion.
i plan to buy a 2005 2.5 rs and am unsure if that will be the right decision. i am not sure wether or not to go with the new 2.5 rs (or used), or a used wrx above the year 2000. i have a buget about 20K and would prefer a new car. However i do like the bugeyes and the larger fog lamps (not to mention a sliding sunroof). It will be my daily car and insurance costs do play a role on my decision. i would be bothered in not knowing the past history of the car so i am kind of partial to a new car. This will be my first new car and i do not want to regret my decision because it will be my car for some time. I do not plan on heavily modding it. All your input is greatly appreciated and i look forward to reading your comments. Thanks! =)

I would definitely recommend buying new, as you never truly know what you are getting buying it used. Also, you will often find generous incentives and rebates, as well as super-low financing with new cars.
One place you can look is carsdirect or edmunds, and they'll give you a decent idea of how low you can go when negotiating the deal (carsdirect is better),and if there are current incentives going.
Most places are selling well below "invoice" price, which isn't really what they pay when you factor in dealer cash and all that jazz.

new vs used
right now, you can get a new base RS 5-speed for around 16K after incentives.
The decision between RS and WRX should not come down to foglamps and sunroofs, these things can be added inexpensively to an RS. It's pretty much strictly a question of power. Does the idea of having 50+ extra horsepower seem worth getting a 2 year old car vs a new one. For most of the people on this forum, myself included, the answer is yes, however, it's not their car, it's your car. If Horsepower is important to you, and you don't plan on heavy mods, get a WRX. If it is irrelevant, save your money

I recently test drove the Saab 9-2X, non-turbo. This car is basically the 2.5RS. After owning a WRX I can honestly tell you that I would not even consider anything less. Without the power and ability to get quite a bit more out of the engine with mods, the Impreza is just not worth it. Maybe an '01 or earlier RS, as they are lighter, look better, and are also available in 2 door body style.

Additionally, the WRX requires super unleaded, and gets poor fuel mileage. It also cost more to insure because of the turbo.

power is relative
it's all relative. If you're driving a 2.5RS vs a civic EX, or a corolla S, it can be said to have excellent power. If you're driving a WRX against a 500 HP blown Mustang, it will feel like a dog. For some, 160+ HP is more than enough. For others, 400 is cause for some celebration, ... and additional mods. I
f you're the latter, avoid the RS, because you'll find yourself dumping $ on mods, then wanting to trade up anyway. if the former, my previous statements, combined with the points about premium gas and higher insurance, might lead you away from a WRX.

You should check out the insurance price difference between a new RS and a used WRX. There is a thread about insurance prices, you can use that to guesstamate but call up insurance companies to be sure.
It all just depends on what you plan to do with the car.

If you want to have a lot of fun with the car, get a WRX. no offense rs owners.
If you want a car that is nice and economical get a RS.
Subaru makes a really reliable car, if it has low miles it is fine. I have 70k on my 02 wrx and its in perfect shape(never had ANY repairs). In adition its has 250whp for 65 of the 70k mile on it. I would worry more about insurance and gas expense. Eitherway you are on the right track with a scooby.

Wow that's great you haven't had any repairs yet.
