I would def. buy the 98-01 RS over the 02+ though. The way I look at it, when you buy the '02+ RS, you get all the ugly of the WRX and only half of the performance. I love the way my WRX looks, but 160hp would never have gotten me through the front door of the dealership.

So the older RS is a better made car. It makes sense considering it was the top of the line Impreza made (in the US) for those years.
I currently have a 99RS and was looking into going up the next generation thinking the RS models were made simular.
Besides the 02+ SOHC compared to the 99's DOHC, I wasn't sure of any other major differences.
Is there an online site with the specs for each car somewhere? Perhaps downloadable brochures of each models even?
Thanks for the info.

Actually, the 98-99 does not have LSD. It wasn't until 2000 the LSD came to the RS. I remember looking into that when I was searching for my RS because it was a feature that I really wanted. In fact, I was looking for a 2000-2001 4-door model, but I found this 99 coupe at such a good deal I couldn't pass it up.
I agree with The_Kraken that ugly is subjective. I personally like all the models of the Impreza. Each redesign has a certain charm to it.
The looks of the 2002 RS doesn't bother me as much as the thought that I may be "downgrading" from the 1999 RS in terms of performance... which is why I'd really like to know the difference between the model years.

I own a MY01 GC8 and wouldn't have any other way. Its a great track car for the buck and a great investment when you consider some of the options you have for mods. Although its said that the new gd imprezas are stiffer, they also wiegh over 3100lbs. Whereas the coupe weighs in just under 2900lbs. That difference is like having just dropped off your hefty friend. Also you get and viscuos type LSD, 4:11 gears as opposed to the trubos 4:44. This is a great advantage because your 5 gear at freeway speeds keeps the motor at just under 3000rpms which is a perfect rev for a laggy ej20 to work in. You also have the functionality of the hood vents which draw the hot underhood air out and gives admirers a glimpse of your ram air filter(once you take the covers off!). Also the GCs keep their fuel tanks under the car and not behind the back seats like the newer models. this helps lower the center of gravity. I also feel strongly about the look of the old car. I used play Sega RallyII at this arcade when id visit my family in Athens Greece. Its where I first discovered what the impreza was even before I was old enough to drive(you must be 18 to get a license in Greece). If you consider the fact the the impreza was first penned in 93, it still looks agressive, purposeful and ready to pounce even when parked. The impreza designers wanted the car to resemble a swan taking flight. The next gen seriously deviated from that graceful theme. I will admit though that I like the newest treatment. After all it was designed by a GReek!!!
