1995 Legacy Sedan - 206,000
Hey guys,
This is my first post here. I am a nissan guy... I autocross and drift a 96 240 here in atlanta. But the reason I am here is because I am thinking about purchasing a subaru daily driver so that I can go track only with the 240.
It is a 1995 Legacy L sedan with 206,000 miles on it. Is this too many miles for a subaru motor? I really cannot guage if the motors in these cars are strong and so I am asking you guys for help. Does anybody have a good idea on how long these motors can typically run for? The car is otherwise in great condition and the asking price is 2,000. What do you guys think?
Thanks for the help.

206k
the motor is fine, Think of it as a Maxima, the body will rust away before the engine stops. @ 200K though, there's no car that's immune from nickel and dime expenses, even if it's been maintained very well. I would think that $2K would be a bit much unless the car comes with a lot of reciepts for recent work done.
Going daily driver is not a bad plan, I've seen some wicked 240's at tracks (Red-top conversions etc...) but I think if you look around a bit you may be able to spend the same or similar $ on a much lower miles car.

As for the 240, here in Atlanta we are starting to get tons of drift events ( about 1 a month ) and so my car is gonna be out of commission quite a lot. Plus, welded diffs are not all that good for city driving.
I am tempted to swap the motor but the car is OBDII so that makes things difficult and the KA has so much tourque that I really have no problem drifting it and i can't justify dropping a few grand on a new motor just yet.
SR20 swap
from what I've heard, the SR20DET swap isn't too bad as long as you don't care about things like AC, power steering, etc... But you're right, from a drift perspective, the KA motor is more than adequate, and the last thing you need to worry about in a drift car is turbo reliability issues. Good luck with it... Also, possibly consider a mid-late 90's Altima for a cheap daily. You can get those REALLY cheap with around 150K miles , and they're close to bulletproof.
