03 wrx A/C problem

I read through all 32 pages of this thread and didnt find anything close to my problem..

The other day I was driving had just got off of the freeway to goto the store when my car starts making this weird noise, I turn the radio off and its like a clicking sound then all of a sudden my A/C gets hot and my car smells like burning rubber im thinking that im melting the belts or something is on fire I pull into the 7-11 and pop my hood.. Belts are find no fire.. So i thought to my self it was the cars around me.. I proceed to go into bestbuy and then come out to my car and get back onto the free way, I have the AC turned on and im in first gear (stop and go traffic) all of a sudden my car makes a loud whoosh sound kinda like a b.o.v. (i dont have one) and i get nerouse then my car starts loosing power and I get that burning smell again... I turn my A/C off and everything is fine.. Anyone have any idea, Or know of a good shop to take it too? Im in the eastbay dont mind driving somewhere if the work is gonna get done right..

Any venders on here do A/C?

The burning rubber smell may be caused by the a/c belt trying to turn an a/c compressor that is about to seize up. Don't use the a/c until you have a chance to get it checked out.

In another car, the a/c compressor seized (failed bearings) and when the a/c switch was turned on, the clutch engaged and the a/c belt was no longer freewheeling. Smoke was rising from underneath my hood as I was driving on the freeway and when I pulled over the belt was smoking badly.

Even if you it turns out to be something other than the compressor, you know that the problem occurs when you engage the a/c switch so avoid using it for now.

could be your compressor seized up once your compressor clutch engages (AC on). Maybe it hasn't completly seized up yet, but causing the pully to spin slower (not freely) once the clutch is engaged. If you keep that up your belt would snap.

BTW, what do you mean you lost power? Like HP or voltage?

Vu at Chet's Auto Care is a pretty good guy. Good luck!

Not sure if my warranty covers it.. I bought it used from a FORD dealership :x.. And by loss of power i mean hp.. Car will feel like you kicked the clutch softly but not as aggressive.

Shouldn't be a problem. Just call the dealership first so it'll save you a trip. Your case sounded very much like my Protege. But mine just seized completely, snap the belt, killed the engine with a lot of smoke. Waited for 5 minutes, restarted the engine, drove fine, but lost power steering, which was expected.

You're right on with the compressor issue. That's EXACTLY what happened to my SVX, and the belt snapped.

I replaced the compressor assembly, recharged the a/c system with a kit I found at Kragen ($40) vs. $1xx that a shop would charge.
