03 wrx Starting problem
I am buying a wrecked 03 WRX, It should be drivable but it won't start. The key that is in the car turns the lock but won't start the car. I believe I hear the fuel pump, the radio works.
The key is something that was made by a locksmith and did not come with the car.
Any suggestions?

it sounds like the alarm might be activated, wrx's came stock w/ alarms and when armed, you cant start the car.
try disarming the alarm first, their should be some kind of valet alarm shut off button somewhere, give that a try.

to disable the factory alarm, put the key in the ignition and turn the key forward and all the way off and repeat three times without turning the engine over.
Thats what it describes in the manual.

After talking to 2 Subaru dealers and Subaru customer service, this is what I believe. There is nothing special about the key.
But there are two types of security systems and one disables the starter. I dug thru the wiring diagrams and found that the security control module must be armed and that prevents the starter from operating. But the lights are not flashing and the horn is not honking so I think a fuse is pulled. I don't have the keyless fob either, but will get one soon, then I will have to program that.
