since our service subaru here is now owned by pflugger the service department sucks!
I'd just like to know who if any has changed (inspected) timing belt, v-belts, oil pump, water pump, thermostat...etc. in accordance to the 60K service that is recommended by the FSM themselves instead of going to a service department to do it. My thing is if I'm going to do that much work to inspect the damn thing I'm going to change it so...
difficulties?
do you have the necessary part numbers?
any recommendations?
tips/tricks?
approximate time frame?
approximate cost of parts?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jon

The 60K service is basically the same as the 30K, mostly a change of all fluids in addition to the regular oil service. Major difference is replacing the spark plugs. Timing belt is not called for until 105K.

really? i know that's what it says but if i'm going to inspect it i'd better just change it you know?
since i've gotten this car i've been to the track religiously every weekend (friday saturday) and in summer time (wed friday saturday). i also auto-x monthly. i think that i've put a lot of stress on the engine after 15000 then it was off to the track. recently within the last year or so since i now have 2 kids i haven't been going as often (that's an understatement).
also... under the oil pump area (2 alan plugs/front of the engine) i see a collection of oil there. i wipe it then at my next oil change i notice that there is oil there again. any ideas?

Well it's up to you what services you want to perform, if it makes you feel better to do some of them early due to the hard use then by all means.
The leak could be from a few things, you might need to remove the timing cover to find the source. If the mileage is under 60K and the engine has not been modified any leaks should be covered under the 5/60 powertrain warranty.

sorry guy. it's at about 68+K right now. i've previously changed/flushed fluids, replaced spark plugs already, replaced fuel fliter...etc. i'm not new to doing maintence on this thing it's just i thought it'd be safer. if i don't change it right now i think i'll end up doing it closer to 80K just to be on the safe side. i'd rather change my timing belt rather than it breaking on me prematurely then me ****in up valves, pistons...etc.

Then go ahead, 80K isn't that early if the car is driven hard often. You'll probably want to do the water pump as well, and if you really want to cover all the possible failure items under the covers you can also replace the belt tensioner and idlers, plus the crank, cam and oil pump seals.
OTOH, I have yet to read of a timing belt breaking on a WRX.

i let the dealer perform the 60k for me cause i don't have the resources to do it on my own. one other thing that i thought was important was the tranny and rear diff maint. some people have the time and ability to do it on their own, i do not. here is some food for thought, even though the timing belt isn't changed until after 100k, mine was going bad after 30k
