WRX 60K service almost $900. worth it?

I scheduled my 60k mile service of my WRX. They quoted close to $900. Is this worth it? I'm not really sure what they do that's actual work besides spark-plug change etc. I don't think they even do an alignment.

Should I do this or just take it in to Sears for a tune-up?

Thanks.

I'll add that I don't use it for racing or anything, but I do drive it about a 120 miles a day. No mods.... just a boring commuter car

That is an insane price.
I would not take it to Sears because I wouldn't trust them to work on it.
There's no "tune-up" required other than the 60K spark plug change. There are no wires and no adjustments to make.
The 60K service is mostly the same as the 30K with the addition of the plug change, and it's really just fluid changes and a bunch of inspections. You can do all the work yourself if you have a place to do it and the proper tools, or you can have a local shop do it for you at a much, much lower price than you were quoted. If you need a shop recommendation try your local forum, try NASIOC as well.
The service schedule can be found in your owners manual, or if you don't have one at www.mysubaru.com

Here's the maintenance schedule.

I've scheduled a local shop and i-Club vendor, Subaru Specialists, to perform the 60k mile maintenance on my MY02 WRX, except for the oil change which I do myself. I won't quote the price (since you're in Atlanta?) but it's (hundreds!) less than what you've been quoted by your local shop.

go to different subaru dealers and get price quotes. i'm in hawaii, and went to 2 different dealers for prices. the first place wanted $850 + price of parts; whereas the second place wanted around $400 with all parts included.

like everything else, shop around for the best price

As stated, you need to understand what they are doing in addition to the required 60K maintenance and decide for yourself if you want to pay extra. I personally paid extra for new serpentine belts and water pump, as I plan to keep the car for a long time...

I asked SOA about this a while back, and their response was that dealers often add a bunch of extra stuff to the service that, whilst probably useful, is not necessary.

You can usually ask them what the extra work is, and then ask for a price for 'required maintennance only'.

My approach was that I had dealer maintennance during warranty - just because it makes any potential claims easier. Now I'm outside of warranty I go to an independant. I think that the 60k service was around $400. Minor services I do myself.

also, ask for their hourly rates. the first dealer wanted $85/hour, while the second wanted $60/hour

Go to Gwinette Subaru

I done my 60K for $500 even. I think the price was supposed to be $499, but I talk them down $30! They were great and the car is like new again.

Of course if you really want value, you should get the Subaru Chase Credit Card. You get 3% on everything (That is great) and you can use that on services, tires and any product from Subaru.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me for my cell number. yannsew@yahoo.com

Knock on wood. Not one single problem with the WRX with 65K.... and plenty of beating daily. What a car!!

I had my 60k done for about $330 and I had thought that was a lot. I guess not anymore.
