Sometimes to LOOK like the word sex from a distance or to SOUND like it vaguely. And the Japanese are/were very aware of different marketing strategies in the US than in japan. I used to own a Datsun SRL311 - the direct ancestor to the 240Z - called Fairlady in japan and most of the rest of the world - just not 'macho' enough for the US. Going the other way, Victor Kiam ("I liked it so much I bought the company!") couldn't give razors away in japan til he switched the package color to mostly metallic gold. Walk down the soap aisle in a store here and you see red.orange yellow maybe lime green. Gold sells in Asia. I don't know if WRX was a simple suggestion by one guy or the result of a dozen 'focus groups' conducted by a high paid ad agaency - but it's quite likely to NOT stand for anything all that significant. George Eastman kinda liked the letter K and wanted a name for his company that would likely be easy to pronounce in most languages - that's where KODAK came from.
suposedly the letter x increases the sales potential for things like by 20% or something. Thats the reason advertisers add things like extreme and explosive and other X words to things. but thats just a thought.

Acura recently thought it would make them cool if they used an X in all of their new cars (RSX, TSX, MDX, NSX) whats up with that. Cadallac SRX, Honda CRX, man I could go on all day.

Plenty of ideas but nothing official.

The prevailing guesses seem to be either World Rally Cross or World Rally Experimental.
