smoking engine/ turbo

ok heres the deal
03 Subaru wrx sedan, 129 k miles 3rd owner
every once in a while no particular thing brings t on, but I will see oil smoke (and can smell it) coming out of the scoop, I have not been able to catch it as it is doing it. well this afternoon I to see where the smoke was coming from.
it is coming from the turbo, cant pinpoint it due the heat shield on the turbo.
herein is my issue being new to the subee world.. what im I looking for, replace the OEM turbo, rebuild it, why is oil smoke there?
what is the stock turbo(v34??) if the turbo is going, then I would rather jut replace it, there are no mods to the car at all.
please help I clubbers, I need some direction

I would check the valve cover on the passenger side. If you haven't replaced the gaskets it's more than likely leaking onto the exhaust manifold/heatshield below it.

Another way to check to see if the turbo is leaking would be to take the intercooler off and see if the oil has made its way to the throttle body. It happened to my 04 sti.
Just thought I'd share my experience.

Check your oil lines on your turbo also.

It threw 3 codes at me, po123, po304, and po108.
The po108 went away when I cleared them just to see if they would come back, but the other 2 came back. I was loosing a lot of oil, and gradually loosing boost, eventually the turbo shaft split in half and I lost all power. The motor had over 200k miles on it so I was planning on pulling it anyways, but that's what happened. I would replace it with a new one. There's not a big market for rebuilding the vf39 turbos. You can get rebuild kits on eBay, and a few other places online, but ya know, I would just get a new one.
