Scooby Newbie here! I need some help!
Hey all! This is a GREAT site, I'm so glad I found it. I'm 23, and making the move from BMW to Subaru. I've decided to chase down my dream car, a Subaru Impreza 2.5 Rs. That's where the help part comes in. I have a ton of questions, and the dealership just gave me a bunch of crap because it's not a new model anymore. So here goes:
What were the model years?
Is there a preference between 2 and 4 door models? (I don't care either way)
What key things should I look for when test driving and inspecting prospective Scoobys?
About how much am I going to be looking at for a good specimen?
Anything else I should know? Thanks in advance!

I don't know the answers to your questions, so I'll just say this.
If the 2.5RS is your dream car, shouldn't you know the answers to your questions? I mean..I wanted a WRX for nearly 4 years before I finally got mine - the first two years were before it came out, and I had only heard they were on their way. The next two were drooling till I could afford it, but I did a bunch of homework in the interim.
Just a thought.

I wasn't trying to be rude in my reply, but I don't understand two things:
1) you've been driving bimmers, but want to switch to a Subaru. OK, WRX or Legacy would make sense. But the RS? Not to dis the RS, it's great for what it is. But I wouldn't put it up against a 3-series!
2) as sonicsuby said, if it's your dream car, you should already know some of this stuff. Between the Subaru home site and Edmunds you'll get specs, reviews, and prices. That's most of your questions answered right there! Good, non-biased info can be had from the Edmunds consumer reviews, and sites like Epinions.
Good luck! Given what I said about the RS being your dream car, don't test-drive one back to back with a WRX. I did. And that was it for the RS....

if someone asks.....
"I wasn't trying to be rude in my reply, but I don't understand two things:" if that's not trying to be rude, what is?
If someone asks', just answer the question. If you have an answer give it up. If you don't then pass it buy. This site is full of great info on cars and I sport my i-club sticker with pride for that reason. Have a nice day...
Kozmo : I hope you find all the info you need.

98-01 are the old body style -- GC8.
98's were available in red, white, black and blue. Only 2 door. Phase I DOHC EJ25 and "regular" front bumper without big round foglights and no rear LSD. 98's have issues with headgasgets. I would stay away from it.
99's were availabe in silver, white, blue, black and "funky" red. 2 door only. Phase SOHC II EJ25. No LSD in the rear. Ver 5 front bumper with large round foglights. Nice car to buy. My personal preference.
00's were not available in blue or black. 4 or 2 door. Same motor as 99's but no MAS and slightly higher compression. LSD standart in the rear.
01's same as 00.
I might have mixed up the colors for 00 and 01 a bit. Double check on that.
in 02, the new body style (GD) was introduced. Besides the body style change, pretty much the same as the 01's.
03's, same as 02.
04, facelifted front end and rear tailights.
I recommend getting the 99's or get an older (93-97) and slap an EJ25 or EJ20T in it. Very nice.

Noise from tranny. Paint. Oil consumpion. Typical used car buying precautions.
About how much am I going to be looking at for a good specimen?
Anything else I should know? Thanks in advance!

I apologize for the snippy tone in my reply. I think I was just in a mood, and for some reason the question threw me a little. I tried to explain myself in the second post.
Indeed this forum is filled with knowledgeable people that are nice and willing to offer their help. I have learned a ton in the past few months here. I just learned that the RS dates back to '98!
That is why i-club rules, and I am proud to be a member. Again, my apologies, and good luck!

Good post, for color-
the 00 had blue available(it was a dark navy) and 01 had black available.
Also the 00-01 had six spoke silver wheels, while the 98-99 had five spokes (I think it was the 98s that had gols 5-spokes)
The 4-door also gets a low wing- while the 2 door had a tall wing.
The 00-01 4 door looks the least boy racer of the bunch (except for those huge fog lights and the hood scoop to nowhere)
I have said this before, if you want an RS, it is a fine car.
If you want speed and are looking to mod a car or just have greaqt performance, you are better off buying a WRX rather than buy an RS and mod that. Just my $.02

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I've also been thinking about just getting a regular Impreza and modding that, since I will be on a limited budget to buy a car. I like the way all the Imprezas look, and I'm willing to bet the Rs front spoiler and other body components will bolt right on. Is there a huge power difference between the Rs and the other Impreza models? What would be a good platform to buy if I don't end up with the Rs?
BTW, I'm not planning on getting a lower-model Impreza, bolting up all the Rs body parts, and slapping Rs badges all over it. If anything, I would just build it up to be a look-alike replica. I am very anti-rice.
