I don't know the answers to your questions, so I'll just say this.

If the 2.5RS is your dream car, shouldn't you know the answers to your questions? I mean..I wanted a WRX for nearly 4 years before I finally got mine - the first two years were before it came out, and I had only heard they were on their way. The next two were drooling till I could afford it, but I did a bunch of homework in the interim.

Just a thought.

Hey all! This is a GREAT site, I'm so glad I found it. I'm 23, and making the move from BMW to Subaru. I've decided to chase down my dream car, a Subaru Impreza 2.5 Rs. That's where the help part comes in. I have a ton of questions, and the dealership just gave me a bunch of crap because it's not a new model anymore. So here goes:

What were the model years?
1998-2001 for the GC/GM6.

Is there a preference between 2 and 4 door models? (I don't care either way)
They aren't even different weights significantly but the 4 door is only available as a 2000-2001 model.

What key things should I look for when test driving and inspecting prospective Scoobys?
On '98s, make sure the MAF recall has been done and the head gasket is ok. Other than that, just give it a good inspection for general issues. There aren't a lot of common problems in the RS except that people tend to abuse the gearboxes. If it doesn't shift well, don't pay full price.

About how much am I going to be looking at for a good specimen?
Between $8-15k depending on year and mileage. Considering the rarity of good RSs on the market, just make sure that it is mechanically sound and hope you can pay less than high book on it.

Anything else I should know? Thanks in advance!
Just that it's an excellent chassis for a fun car. It's not nearly as refined as the BMWs, but it has every bit as much potential.

if someone asks.....

"I wasn't trying to be rude in my reply, but I don't understand two things:" if that's not trying to be rude, what is?

If someone asks', just answer the question. If you have an answer give it up. If you don't then pass it buy. This site is full of great info on cars and I sport my i-club sticker with pride for that reason. Have a nice day...

Kozmo : I hope you find all the info you need.

What were the model years?
98+.

98-01 are the old body style -- GC8.

98's were available in red, white, black and blue. Only 2 door. Phase I DOHC EJ25 and "regular" front bumper without big round foglights and no rear LSD. 98's have issues with headgasgets. I would stay away from it.

99's were availabe in silver, white, blue, black and "funky" red. 2 door only. Phase SOHC II EJ25. No LSD in the rear. Ver 5 front bumper with large round foglights. Nice car to buy. My personal preference.

00's were not available in blue or black. 4 or 2 door. Same motor as 99's but no MAS and slightly higher compression. LSD standart in the rear.

01's same as 00.

I might have mixed up the colors for 00 and 01 a bit. Double check on that.

in 02, the new body style (GD) was introduced. Besides the body style change, pretty much the same as the 01's.

03's, same as 02.

04, facelifted front end and rear tailights.

I recommend getting the 99's or get an older (93-97) and slap an EJ25 or EJ20T in it. Very nice.

Is there a preference between 2 and 4 door models? (I don't care either way)
4-doors have a tad stiffer chassis. More popular in Japan, so more body kits are available for it. (The side skirts are diff between 2 and 4 door). Small weight difference. 4-doors are less comfy to climb in and out for taller/larger peeps.

[quote]What key things should I look for when test driving and inspecting prospective Scoobys?[/qoute]

Noise from tranny. Paint. Oil consumpion. Typical used car buying precautions.

About how much am I going to be looking at for a good specimen?
That I don't know. Sorry.

Anything else I should know? Thanks in advance!
While some people here are too lazy to give answers to your questions, there are those who will take their time and answer them. Don't take it personal and wait for good answers.
