Redlined
I was on the highway, slowing down, so I downshifted. I accidentally gave it too much gas and I redlined for about 1 second, maybe a little more, but not more than a second and a half. I quickly upshifted so I could get the car out of the redline area.
Would that 1 second long redline cause a lot of damage to my car?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
BTW, my car is a 2000 2.5 RS.

1 second? None.
If it hit the rev limiter you probably noticed that it cut out a little bit. Stock rev limit is actually slightly conservitave. The engine was designed to go up there, just not for very long.
You're fine.

That short amount of time at redline is okay. Even going 200-300rpm above redline under compression wouldn't cause a problem. Anything beyond that (say 8000) and you start to run into valvetrain problems like float and you might smack a piston with a valve. No worries, you're good to go.

This site is meant to be helpful to people, and the guy is asking a genuine question. So if you posted something that retarded as a joke, don't do it again because it wasn't funny. If you want to troll around and be a jerk to people, go to some other site and don't post here anymore.

I've bounced my car's engine off the rev limiter a number of times (iirc, the rev limit's at 7200 or so, the redline's at 7k), with no obvious ill effects. You should be fine.

dude i have redlined my car more times than I can think...hit the limiter a couple times....
it happens...the motor can take more than the limiter will let you give it so unless you drive down the freeway pinning it on the limiter for like 10 miles you're gonna be fine.

After reading these posts I'm not sure if this has been said yet.....or perhaps it has and I've just misunderstood. Anyhow, the rev limiter will only help you if you "redline" while you're in the current gear (we'll say 3rd). If you stay on the throttle, the engine will eventually cut out automatically a little past 7k rpms. Now let's say you downshift into 2nd while traveling at a speed that would be higher than that gear would normally redline at (above 65?). If you're able to get it into gear, the engine will be forced to try and keep up with the rest of the drivetrain. A rev limiter won't help at this point and you could possibly damage the engine.
