Radar Detectors

What do you recommend? I have looked into the Valentine One, but $400 is a little bit pricey. Any other less expensive, but still reliable options to look at?

EDIT: After looking at other posts, anything more recent that people have experienced?

Get a V1 it really is worth it. it will be the last one you ever get. Mine if from 92 I sent it back 3X to be upgraded and it still works great

otherwise the bel 980 is pretty good as well. old roomate had it and it never let him down, i think he picked it up for around 250 or so. its not as nice as the v1 though

I second the Passport Escort 8500. Of course Im a little biased but it has done its job for me.

If you don't wanna spring for the V1, just go with a base model Whistler. Mine is going on 5 years old, only cost me $70 originally, and still beats out most of my friends relatively high-end detectors. It doesn't look especially pretty, or have a million features, but it's got great range, and doesn't throw too many false alarms, which are the two things that you need most in a detector.

One of my friends has one (a cheap whistler) that he bought a year before I bought mine, and it's still goin' strong too.
