Yes a radar detector is worth it, it has saved me numerous times. I don't leave home without it. I just have a cheap one from best buy and it works great.

umm do they only detect radar? or do they also tell you if a cop car is neer because radar is not what im worried about i know most of the sports around here, im worried that they will be stopped behind some cars and see me and jump after me.

Yes they detect radar, hence the name radar detector, what usually happens is that the detector will beep faster and faster the closer you get to a cop with his radar on.

Are they worth it yes. Will it prevent tickets when your doing 90mph... NO Realize its exactly what it says, you still need to slow down when you get beamed by radar so you best only be going like 10mph over or get raped when they come into view.

In California they are. Don't know about other states, but my buddies radar detectors goes off a lot on major trucking routes in other states, which makes me think they are legal in other states.

Back to the original poster... it's a radar detector, not a cop detector. If you are driving like a jackass, they don't need to hit you with the radar to pull you over (or ticket you).

Don't spend 400 bucks, get a Cobra for 70-100 bucks and eventhough it isn't as good as Valentine or Passport it will give you enough warning if you 10-20 over limit. Just having it gives me piece of mind.

I wouldnt trust the cheap detectors. I know many people who have gotten tickets because they didnt get enough warning from their cheap detector. I'm on the PA turnpike alot and many of the hiding spots are good for sheilding the radar until you are right on the cop so only the more expensive detector is going to work better. Motor Trend did a good article recently so check it out on their website. If you are gonna spend the money save up and get the escort 8500 or valentine. I have been in a car with both of them inside at the same time and they perform about the same.

Yes, the two mentioned are better then the rest. Nonetheless the Cobra gives enough warning if you aren't going too fast, say 110 or so. I have it and it gives me enough warning for what it costed.
