question about short intakes

They shouldn't be hard to install on any car, but the benefits from them usually don't outweigh the downsides. You might be able to make a few more horsepower, but you can't be sure of that depending on heatsoak due to the position. From what I've read, the intake can be pretty touchy on the subaru's

Installing an intake on a WRX is a bad idea. It will lean out your A/F ratio (which turbo engines are very picky about to begin with versus NA), and you already have an intercooler to cool the air going in. Get a K&N filter and leave it at that. My $0.02.

i agree with cabal
I have also heard this about short ram air intakes. They will make the car run lean and this isnt good for a turbo car. What I did was performed a modified version of the intake silencer mod. Instead of removing it completely I cut the silencer just below the elbow leading from the plastic piece leading into the fender and then backout to the stock air box. This way I still take in air from the grill and since the silencer is open at the bottom air rushes in from the fender. I then installed like cabal suggested putting a k and n drop in panel filter into the stock air box. This seems to work well. I dont know about any performance gains if any, but it will breathe easier and you can hear the air rushing in/sucking as the car revs up when moving. I hope this helps. I would save the money youw ould spend on the air intake and buy an upipe or downpipe. You will achieve more from this than from the intake.
