Picking between a new 05 or 06 WRX...Probably some newbie track ?s too

Currently I own a 00 RS Sedan which I use as my daily driver. I like the car a lot but really look at it as my run around appliance. It is completely stock and doesn't get driven a lot. Only has about 30k miles.

My fun, track/autocross car is a 1990 Miata. I have owned the car forever it seems and it has pretty much turned into a track only car. Aluminum Kirkey seats, no ac or ps, no carpet, no stereo etc. Until a few weeks ago the car was turbo'd and was pretty quick (13.5 at 106mph with really bad 60 foot times).

Here's a link http://www.cardomain.com/ride/325668/1

I think I'm getting old because I just don't enjoy cramming myself in that little car to drive to the track much anymore. I have to drive a min. of 150 miles to get to any of the tracks around me. It's too hot, rides to bad with the metal race seats and I have to pull a trailer to get my race tires to the track.

I have decided to combine by cars so to speak and pick up a WRX. When I got to the dealership to check 'em out, I was confronted with both 05s and 06s. They are giving out some nice deals for the 05's but the 06's have some nice hardware.

The 06's have the 2.5 turbo motor which I'm sure gives a little more bottom end. They also have what appear to be some nice brakes. 4 piston fronts and 2 piston rears. They also come with 17s.

My guy at the dealership said they are putting out a new low-ball version of the WRX at a lower price. No fancy stereo or climate control crap. No seat, mirror or wiper heaters etc.

I'm trying to decide which car to get. I can get the 05 at a good price but the 06 seems to have some nice upgrades especially with the brakes......

.......that is if the brakes on the 06 are the real deal. They look nice and sound legit on paper but are these brakes going to be up to track abuse?

I'm not going to mess with the motor but will upgrade the suspension for the track. I'm completely overwhelmed by how many suspension choices there are for the WRX. I just run revalved Koni's with Ground Control coilovers on my miata. 600lb fronts and 325lb in the back.

I've run with many WRX's on the track but have not run into many that were set up much past stock I think. They were fast on the straights and sweepers but had lots o' body roll and brake dive.

Sorry for the long post...I'm just trying to get a handle on things I guess. 05 or 06?

Will the brakes on the 06 be enough? Would a cheap 05 with a brake kit be a better choice?

Where should I start suspension wise? I don't want super rediculous hard core action like my miata is but I do want adjustablilty and competence on the track. I'm sure I would need camber plates and what not too.

Any advice would be great.

Oh.....and I love the no wing trunk lid look. Are people just finding other impreza owners to trade with or just taking the wings of and filling the holes?

Can you order a car with no wing?

Only the LTD will come standard with a wing so you should be able to find one without one.

The stripped down version you hear about is the TR "Tuner Ready" version.

It will be minus the Auto climate control and the 6CD changer.

If you want to read up on more of the 06 models:

Although the 06's look nice (love the new head lights) go with a 05. The gearin on the 06 was changed to longer gears to help with the gas millage but kills the accleration.. Any one know if the air diffuser on the 06 will fit a 05??

i don't think it will fit because they changed the hood scoop design on the new model(06). It looks similar to the 02-03 sti hood scoop.

Replies to your question on brake upgrades for the '05 WRX has been split off to a new thread and will soon be moved to the Impreza Brakes forum.
