Nervous About upgrades

Hey everyone, a buddy of mine owns a 96 Talon tsi turbo and he added some mods which are along the same lines as the ones I plan on adding and he had a problem his air intake was sucking in too much cold air and it was screwing his car up he has a blitz short ram intake and an apexi n1 3'' exhaust. I plan on adding an aem cold air system and a buschur racing 3'' exhaust I'm just nervous it will screw up my ride like it did to his have any of you heard of a similar problem or a way to counter act it. he said overall the problem was not enough back pressure but I didnt think a 3'' exhaust would do that.

hi
i have been reading alot that teh cai arent worth the money for the wrx. I heard from numerous sources that just do the silencer mod instead. What id id was i sliced the silencer off just below the elbow going from the ram air under the hood and intot eh fender and back intot eh air box. i removed the silencer tooka hack saw to it
and cut most of it off and then reinstalled it to the ram air and the air box. Now i get cold air from grill and cold air up from the fender. Ask around but i wouldnt spend the money ona cai. I was going to buy one but heard it was a waist so id idnt

i own a 95 talon tsi, and currently have a cai on order. i have a custom 2.5" full turbo back exhaust. i am pretty sure back pressure is not the cause. turbos create enough b/p alone, you pretty much run a full open exhaust. i don't think you can suck in"too much cold air." what exactly was his car doing? was he venting his bypass to atmosphere instead of recirculating? just trying to figure out whats happening.

CAI = Bad news for the WRX
Read this thread "CAI Pro and Cons":

Get an Uppipe instead of the CAI. Very, very important for turbo spool up.

Mods that wont screw up the car and have little side effects:
Intake silencer removal,
Samco hoses,
Lightweight crank pulley,
and pretty much anything to improve the exhaust (downpipe/uppipe/catback/turboback/etc.)

I have to disagree with modding the Lightweight crank pulley. If there is a doubt then don't do it. You should only do things that are 100% safe. Read this thread to learn why pulleys are bad:

The only way to get a the best from a mod is to do all the mods that help it. A cold air on it's own helps spool, but not much power, atleast mine did that. I have the XS one that "added" 13 hp, with not Air/fuel turing done yet. But then there is more air then what it has stock so it messes with the ecu, which means your not getting the full use of it. I got a cold air and turbo back with no cats, and it added more up top, a little bit down low. When I add an uppipe my turbo would spool a lot faster.
BTW sounds like Joel knows his stuff.

I tend to disagree about the pulley showing any sort of power gains. From what I can tell, you dont get the power gains from the engine producing more power, just that the car revs faster at lower RPM's. With my 1.8l, it made a HUGE difference which was surprizing. With the WRX, a pully would allow the engine to rev faster and get the turbo engaged a bit faster. You cant see those types of power gains on a dyno. And as joel stated, harmonics are not an issue like with other cars due to the Boxer engine layout.
