looking at the WRX and have a few questions
new here looking to get rid of my TT for the WRX and have a few questions.
Any common problems to look out for? Heard of stock trannies going a while back.
All the reports make these sub 6second 0-60 claims but I still doubt them. Has anyone g-teched their stock car to confirm that?
Any thoughts on mods? Which ones first? I heard the suspension is a little soft (I upgraded to konis on the TT because I thought the stock set-up needed to be firmer) so I thought that woould be my first move.
I'll be test driving one next weekend (POS TT is in the shop again) and w/only 1k left on warranty I don't wan't this crap to start happening on my buck.
Probably a repost, and a beat to death subject but I did not find any answers in the faq.
Thx for the feedback.

Sorry you are having problems with your TT, if you are talking Audi TT they make a great car. I had a '01 A4 with the 1.8t. Awesome car.
As far as mods go just a simple mod of doing an exhaust change has allowed people to run in the mid 13's in the 1/4. Other mods would be suspension and sometype of engine management. Depends on what you want the car to do.

thx for the feedback. The TT has been great thus far but at 49k miles (2.5 yrs) and crap is going wrong left and right and w/only 1k left on warranty I don't want to get hit with problems out of warranty. Small electric gremlins and now bigger items (I think it is the coilpacks this time). Plus I could get a new WRX build in the neg equity from my TT and still be pating a hell of alot less then my TT per month.
Any problems w/the coilpacks on the A4 yet?

Maybe this isn't the place for it...
I work for an import auto parts wholesaler/distributor on the west coast and I am continullay hearing about coilpack problems with the Audi/VW 1.8 20V turbo and VR6. A good customer of mine has had his '02 Jetta 1.8T in twice for non-firing cylinders, the coilpacks were the culprit.
He bought his Jetta about a month before I bought my WRX. So far I have had a wheel balance problem (directly off the dealer lot......was rectified under warranty no questions asked) and a minor rattle in the dash (that I fixed myself instead of tying the car up at the dealer). He has had the coil failures, a recall on his ABS unit, and a window regulator/motor fail. And an issue with CEL coming on (not related to coilpacks).
Frankly, I have heard alot of people (in the know) that are very frustrated with the newest offerings from Volkswagen. One of my top accounts bought his mother a 2001 2.0 liter Jetta and the car began consuming 1 qt of oil every 750 miles. The dealer admitted that there was a problem with ring-to-cylinder wall seal.
I have traditionally been a VW fan, I have raced the old aircooleds for about 15 years, have owned a water-cooled Vanagon, a 1990 Jetta and my wife drives a 1998 Golf GL daily. Unfortunately, my love affair with VW has ended after hearing so much negative info about them.
Not that ANY car is perfect, but I am impressed so far with the WRX (and my parent's 2002 Outback 2.5).

thanks for that feedback on your WRX. I love my TT great styling, good performance for my 1st 40k miles 0 I mean 0 problems. But now they are just adding up. Oh and the ABS problem just crept up on mine. If I had the coin I would swap the current TT for a new one. But it just isn't in the chips. The other big problem AoA has not admitted to is the DV(Bypass valve) failing or not performing up to spec. I replaced mine w/a Forge in my 1st 1k miles. Seems like Subi has it right now to convinve the GF it really does look good!
I don't think Aoa has got their Customer Service in shape to fix(or even admit to) these problems yet. People are exp nightmares w/their service depts too.
Every car has its problems but now they are getting out of hand.

forgot to mention.......
A guy I used to know bought a Golf GTI 1.8T a few years back.....maybe mid 2000? Anyway, he was always commenting on how FAST the car was. We went for a ride (this was pre WRX days for me), and I was not very impressed. He let me take the wheel, and secretly I was sighing with disappointment inside. The powerband was very flat. You have to understand, I was driving a 12.60 second 1967 VW Bug to work most every day (minus the drag slicks), so this anemic 150hp Golf was a real slouch. Anyway, I think this guy sensed my lack of enthusiasm, so he starts telling me about a faulty diverter valve and how he'll have to take it back to the VW dealer AGAIN, or update it ot a Porsche 944 Turbo valve.
I went and test drove Golf GTI's before I bought my WRX. I wanted a VR6 GTI or a Focus SVT. I drove the Golf and wasn't impressed. I had read about the WRX around the same time but didn't believe all the raving. But I test drove one and a day later I bought it. The car was a monster compared to the lazy VW's. Test drive it and you'll understand.

ohh I odn't question the performance aspect at all. That's my primary reason for wanting one. Just going from the fit and finish of the TT to the WRX has others close me puzzled.
Gotta love all the VW and Audi guys faulting bad performance on the DV alone LOL!

go enjoy yourself
So I guess the DV IS a problem?
Sure, maybe the WRX doesn't have the hip-cool, ultra sleek interior finish of the Audis, but that's superficial anyway!!
I ran my hard on a 125 mile road trip through some tight, one lane roads in a very remote area of the SF/Bay Area and had a blast. Not once did I consider the lack of leather seating in the WRX.

No doubt the WRX is great, but you gotta love how skewed the previous post is regarding the GTI experience. Those things can really haul especially when chipped. We may pull them from a stoplight, but unless a WRX is modded they will pull on the highway. Maybe jimR was just in bad form that night as the 1.8T motor is in no way flat. The only flat thing about it is the nice flat torque band.

skewed?
My view of the GTI wasn't skewed. I drove this car previous to my consideration, let alone test drive of the WRX. The particular GTI I drove was an early 150hp version, not the 180hp car. A Golf IV with merely 150hp feels flat in my opinion. The wide toque band is there, no doubt, but lacks character. I have ridden in 180hp 1.8T Jetta, better, but still doesn't pull like a WRX.
Yes, the VWs with ECU mods can be quick. But this is an Impreza forum, is it not?
thank you,
