flat 4 or 6 = H4 or 6 = boxer 4 or 6.
The new H6 in the Outbacks is completely new engine afaik. The new one is short, to fit in the space of a 4 cylinder engine.

Anyhow, The XT6 was a 2.7 (ER27) and again was the same as the 1.8(EA82) but with two more cylinders tacked on. (1.8 / 4 cylinders = 4.5l per cyl * 6 cyl = 2.7l!) The pistons are in fact interchangable between the 1.8 and the 2.7 XT6 except that the turbo pistons were lower compression(Makes it easy to make a high power turbo xt6). Same went with the 3.3l (EJ33) SVX motor. The pistons in the 3.3l were a higher compression version of the 2.2l(EJ22) motor's. You can build a high compression 2.2 using SVX pistons. Subaru really has done some pretty cool things over the years though. I'm glad to see they are finally bringing back all the cool stuff for the STi!

I was just wondering since I had heard that the SVX had a flat 6 as well and thought that Subaru might have brought it back, redesigned as the H6.
