They were still making them after 95, but only in japan... the reason the 93-95s were so unreliable is because they were turbocharged, the rx-8 is a N/A motor producing the same horsepower as the turbo rotary...the old gsl-ses like i have commonly last for around 300,000 miles.
I've only done exhaust (header, straight pipe, straight through muffler). and the "free" mods, weight reduction and removing every single unnecesary part under the hood (a/c, cruise, emissions, ect) I'm guessing my 1/4 time is around 14.9-15.1
If i did that LS1 swap everyone on rx7club would hate me, most everyone there hates v-8 swaps into 7s.
Edit: if an apex blows, it's not a huge deal, the engine will just loose compression. It of course will need rebuilt, but it will still run with a blown seal.

It's a matter of taste, the rotary is the heart and soul of the rx-7, i'm neutral on the swaps though... it's just a matter of personal preference, i just don't really like mixing genres, american muscle mixed with japanese import, but whatever... it IS instant 11-12s.
