Which Impreza wagon is best to build up(95-01)?
I want to build up an impreza wagon, but im not to sure which one would be best. I want an AWD model, preferably with 4-wheel disk brakes. I plan on swapping suspension, engine, etc. I tried to search for info but couldn't find any. But I have a few questions:
Are all the wagons basically the same throughout the years, or was there major changes besides cosmetically?
Do some have stronger parts than others?
Are the AWD systems the same or are they different?
I plan on purchasing one in the next month after I sell my ae86, so any links or anwsers would be great.
Thanks,
Tony

Newer is typically better because, well, they're newer. After about '96 or '97 you'll mostly find rear discs, and everything will be AWD. If you're not planning on a motor swap soon, the 2.2 and SOHC 2.5s are best bets.

Car Info: 95 Impreza Wagon... 1.8 Litres of fury!
The cars did change from OBD 1 to OBD2 starting in 96 I believe, if that affects your options on engine swaps... In 95 you couldn't get the 2.2 with a manual trans, only a 1.8 manual or 2.2 auto. Cars with ABS have 4 wheel disc. Like BAN SUV's said above, get the 2.2 if you're not planning on a swap soon. As far as I know there were no suspension changes, except some early models did not come with a rear sway bar, so you must switch out the lateral links or get box endlinks to use a rear sway. ~97+ got a face lift. Wagons had 4.11 gearing while sedans had 3.9 IIRC. The rest of the AWD system remains unchanged.
Common problems I can think of off the top of my head that will cost you $
Engine Oil leak from valve covers, rear main seal, oil pump, cam seals
Front CV Joints / axles / halfshafts
Loose crank pulley bolt
Leaky window seals causing noise and small mounts of moisture into the car
Clutch
That is all for now that I can think of. Good luck.
