Hot to start out the right way.....(car choice)

This is my first post here, hello all. I am in the market for one of the beloved WRX models. I am torn between the STi and the WRX. I know I can modify the WRX to be of a better performer than the stock STi within the price difference, But is the loss of relaibility worth it? I really want to keep the car as reliable as I can, as I will be driving 2 hours(RT) everyday for a work commute.
Is the deal I can get on a new WRX that much better than the STi? or an I going to kick myself in the butt, when I find out there is major power to be released from the STi in the future?
I am leaning towards the STi now, but the prices of the WRX and the articles in recent magazines (think "Spank the STi" and Vishnu WRX) clearly showing a mod WRX kicking butt.
Am I in need of some a$$whipping and just get the STi?
Let me know what you pros think, what would you do if you had the choice?
thanks again...Barry (newbie for now)

If you have the money I would get the STi. There is lots of potential for the WRX but there is just as much potential for the STi. In the SCC "Spank the STi" that STi was completely stock if I remember correctly. And these cars with 5k mods in them were just barely keeping up with it(in Vishnu's case beating it) but if you have the money you might as well get an STi because then you can mod it in the future and have some good power out of it.

S..........T..........I...............
I met this guy from import tuner magazine a week or so ago. He had a WRX with a STI motor swap and 6 speed tranny. From what he said ,something like 370 hp, the bigger displacement motor is where it is at. It's like my pops used to tell me, you can't make a small block chevy a big block chevy boy.
If you want to go really fast, go big to start with. Plus if you commute, the six speeder will do you right.

Yes, I def. like the 2.5 over the 2.0, that will/should show a major improvement in gains when a little added boost in the future. I don't like that the gas mileage is not that great. Anybody find exhaust/pipe/ecu/intakes help in mileage?
Is the ride in the STi that much more "harsh" than in the standard WRX?

STi ...theres no replacement for displacement...except forced induction...with the STi you get both...2.5L is great if you can afford it...you get more power stock and much more power with a few basic bolt ons...teh IHI vf30 is good for 350 HP

You can get them off of ebay for like msrp, I think that is probably the best you will do with them. I wouldn't think any dealer will go to invoice just because it is a "limited edition" car. So there is always going to be someone to pay msrp. But I definitely think you would be a fool to pay any markup. If they want a markup I would go buy an Evo for less. The steering on the evo is nicer too. Not to dog subarus but the dealers seem to think that the STi is the hottest car that will ever be released, and they are sadly mistaken.

yeayh, it is pretty funny, the one STi I was looking at my dealer in the area has his car on ebay! I saw it browsing on ebay and was pretty suprised. I am sure they will not tell you that it is on ebay if you go to the dealer. here it is..
I do like the white, but I would want the silver wheels

TEST DRIVE!!!
The only way to know which you want is to try it out.
I've spoken to my local dealer and he said that they have had a few people with money down back out and buy a WRX when they drive the STI and see how tightly sprung it is.
If you want such a car, go for it!....
However, if you have a long commute, and depending on the roads, the slightly more plush WRX may serve you better.
Me, I'm waiting for my 400HP flat-six Twin-scroll turbo Legacy Wagon STI!!!!!
