Help, oil problem.

Hey guys,

So I have a problem with my car and I was hoping you guys might have some answers. I have a 2007 WRX with 42,000 miles on it. Recently my car has been smoking under the hood. I checked the oil and relized that the oil level was below the dip stick. I then replaced one and a half quarts of oil into my car.

I have now been trying to figgure out what the problem is. My car is losing oil very slowly. It only is losing oil when the car is on. The car does not leak oil when it is turned off, hence there are no oil spots under my car. I am not sure what the problem is. Some people say there its a leak in a line, a cracked oil pump, ect.

Has anyone had this problem and might know what it is?

Thanks.

Sounds like you're leaking some where. Take it to reputable Subaru Shop!

All turbo cars "lose" oil slowly as they run - they combust it. I also have a spot-free driveway, and I also put in 1/2 quart between oil changes. More than 1 quart might indicate a more serious issue, as would smoking under the hood, but an actual liquid oil leak (oil making it past a gasket or seal) would always result in an eventual spot on the ground. Unless the oil is dripping in such a way that it hits a very hot surface and burns, or it is pooling in the frame somewhere, you can't lose that much oil without leaving some on the ground. To test it, just idle the car for 20 minutes, hood up, and keep an eye out for where the smoke is coming from; line under the car with newspaper and keep track of where any oil comes down (though this is only a rough indicator, I've seen oil from one side of an engine travel to the other along the bottom of a hose before it finally drips)

I believe the powertrain warranty on your car is up to 6 years or 60 thousand miles and covers the engine and transmission. What does your book say the warranty period is for powertrain? Take it to the dealer and describe how much oil you add per xx amount of miles and when does the smoke occur.

WARNING "I am not a mechanic" anything Isay is just internet speculation. However if it is smoking a little underhood and consuming oil rapidly It sounds like you may have a faulty seal in the turbo or a crack. Take it to the dealer if under warranty.
