Help! I don't know what this noise is
I don't know how accuratley i can describe this but when i'm driving and shift any where from 3,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm my car makes kind of a scratch noise like a noise a powerwheel would make. I know its not the clutch because it's not when i push the clutch in. It happens when the rpms start to go down. It also happens when i'm going down a hill and the rpms are in that range. If someone could help me with any thoughts on what it might be because i fear it could be costly. Thanks

So its not just when your shifting? That thread that Elhaym posted a link to looks similar to what your describing. If it is just when your shifting its pssible that your syncros could be worn or on their way out. How many miles on your car?

I have experienced this and many other problems with noise from my transmission. One of the problems is like the one described above. When the revs are over 3,000 and I let off the gas there is not just a rattle noise, but also a popping noise. I also hear the pop between shifts but that is not constant. Does anyone here have a really noisy exhaust? I mean I have stock exhaust on a 01 RS and it sounds like baffles rattling alot.

Thanks that link describes the problem exactly. So it sounds like nothing to worry about? I have a really loud exhaust and it makes the poping noise but thats pretty normal on cars with an exhaust. My car right now has about 70,000 miles on it. So it could be something. Thanks though
