Unhappy Just don't know what to get???? HELP

I need everyone's help.

For the past couple months I have been planning on getting the Cobb AP. I currently have Buschur Racing 3" cat-back. My next purchase will be the Helix 3" DP. Then my plans were to purchase the AP. I have been reading article after article/threads about the Cobb AP & the Vishnu stage packages and now I am just confussued. I need help bad because I would like to start placing my orders.

Cost is a concern I don't want to break the bank that's why I liked the AP because of it's value. I just want a soild thinking in my head of what products to buy. My plans are stage 2 as you probably can tell.

Questions:

-I DO have access to 93 octane so is it ok for me to run the 93 octane map on the access port?? Or is the 93 octane map good for 104 octane???

-Who has the better platform for future upgrades?? Cobb Stage 2 or Vishnu stage 0??

-Does anyone have 1/4mile times with the AP @ stage 2. I know Cobb's web site is stating 13.4.

-Cobb says the AP is user friendly. True?

I feel I dont need the Vishnu stage 0 becuase I already had the TBE. I just want a good performer for now and the future. Please help me with some peace of mind.

Thanks,

Thumbs up

it depends what you want man. do you want to get it done one time and get it over with or do you plan on adding more mods? if you planning on adding more mods beyond cobb stage 2.5 then i would suggest vishnu or ecutek. Cobb is good for the money, but it's very limited to vf34 and vf30 turbos.

Yeah.. a turbo upgrade will prob. be in the future. I seem to recall Cobb offering maps for the vf34 and vf30 turbos?

"Who has a better platform for future upgrades?"

Cobb tuning does offer more for less off the shelf.
You won't need 93 octane unless you're running on a 93 octane fuel map.
Vishnu will require a dynotune. Something you won't need with the AP.
If you're going to beef up your turbo, dynotuning is neccessary. Vishnu is a beeter platform for future upgrades. Be prepared to fork over big bucks.

Have you checked out ECUtec? They're local from where you live.

I think I am leaning towards the AP. TurboXS is about 20 min away but it is alomost impossible to get in there. Plus the UTec is pricey and still requires a dyno tune.

Actually you dont need a dyno tune to go Vishnu stage 0 but you do have to send your ecu in to have an off the shelf map flashed.

Like b4437 said Cobb makes off the shelf maps for VF30 and VF34 turbo upgrades but beyond that (right now) you would need a dyno tune for anything else.

I have Cobb stage 2 and I am very happy with it. I dont have any 1/4 mile times for you but I can tell you it pulls like a mo fo. I started off with stage 1 (with a catback) then I installed a TXS DP, STI upipe and flashed stage 2 with the accessport (very easy) and within 5 min the car was ready to go. If in the future I want to go with a dyno tune which is better than any off the shelf map I will upgrade to the streetuner.

If you dont have a turbo and egt gauge you may want to buy them just to be safe. My car never runs hotter than 1500 degree egt's but I have heard of some stage 2 WRX's running over 1600. Here is a link to Cobb's discussion forum http://www.wrxforum.com/cgi-bin/ulti...cgi?category=4. Read up and you will see the good, the bad and the ugly about the accessport (mostly the bad and ugly) but remember that most people are haveing good results (like me) and people that dont have problems are not as likely to post. It is important to do some research on these modifications so you know if something is damageing your engine like detonation or high egt's.

Good luck

Awesome man!!!

Thanks for the help. I am not leaning toward the AP. Sounds perfect.

If your serious about modifying you car to safely handle power at a stage 2 and beyond then Dyno tuning is the way to go.... there are many options that are excellent in that catagory. I just recently had my car EcuTec reflashed and dyno tuned by shiv of Vishnu and it was the best money ive spent so far. I plan on going to stage 4 by next summer just in time for him to come back and tune me up again. Thats the beuty of a good engine managment system it takes into consideration everything not just blindly loads maps.

Did you drive from NY to Cali for that tune or did Shiv actually go to NY and if so how much did it cost? I'm guessing he was in town for a show or something and did some tuneing at another EcuTec shop with a dyno.

I agree that a dyno tune is much better than any off the shelf map for performance and safety but it can get expensive since dyno tuneing is around $100 an hour. I dont agree that an off the shelf map by Cobb or Vishnu is done blindly since both companies have tuned many WRX's and set the maps up with safety in mind since no 2 cars are exactly the same. I plan on upgradeing to the streetuner before I go with a bigger turbo so I can get a custom map. The accessport is a good way to slowly upgrade without haveing to spend hundreds on tuneing every time you add a mod.

I just realized you have an 04 WRX. There have been a lot of people with 04's on Cobb maps that have experiencing knock and that is something to be concerned about. I'm not sure but it wouldnt surprise me if most of them are from Cali since they dont have the best gas there.

I would also recommend going with an upipe before stage 2. If you up the HP a lot and dont do the upipe a piece of the cat in the stock pipe could break off and trash your turbo. Here is an example (bov is most likely the culprit) https://www.i-club.com/forums/engine-power-ej20t-pre-2006-wrx-jdm-60/factory-up-pipe-destroyed-my-turbo-74750/

Are you going with the catless Helix DP?

Thanks,

yes I am going with the Helix catless DP. Here on the east coast I have access to 93 everyday and 94. So I plan on running the 91 octance stage 2 map with 93 octane gas for security. The only thing about the uppipe is that cobb doesn't require an uppipe with there maps. I can see that can cause pinging because the maps were not designed to be used with an uppipe.

Here is some info from Cobb's map download page that shows that an upipe is ok to use with stage 2 and here is a link to that page http://www.cobbtuning.com/wrx/access...2093%20oct.txt.

Additional Notes:
For use with a stock turbo, stock injectors, stock intake and a TURBOBACK
exhaust system. Additional modifications such as uppipe and underdrive pulley
are still within the acceptable parameters of this mapping. MUST USE FACTORY
INTAKE. NO AFTERMARKET INTAKES ARE CERTIFIED COMPATIBLE WITH THIS MAPPING.
Best if used with 93 and 94 octane. For 92 octane please use the 91 octane
mapping.

From what Cobb told me on the phone, it will not be safer running a stage 2 91 octane map while useing 93 octane so since you can get 93 octane gas you would be better off with the 93 octane map (+5hp).

Awesome man!! That really, really, answered a lot of questions I had. So since Cobb told you 93 octance was safe with the 93 v1.20 map that's the way I'm going to go.

Now another question: I will most likley have my Helix catless DP before the AP comes in. So is it ok to download the Stage 2 93 octane v1.20 base map? Then for example, if I were to drive my car accross the county where 93 octane wasn't availible anymore. Should I just flip to the Realtime map - Stage 2 91 octane?? Hope that makes sense.

Thanks again.

Sorry it took so long to respond, I have been very busy the last few days. Yes, your best bet would be to just switch your realtime map to the 91 octane map whenever 93 is'nt avalable. If the battery is disconnected the ecu will revert to your basemap so if you use the 91 real time with the 93 base and you have the car serviced it would be a good idea to check the accessport and make sure you still have the 91 octane realtime map loaded. If for some reason you dont have your accessport on you and you are'nt able to get the required octane gas just make sure to run the car very easy untill you are able to get a full tank of the required octane fuel.

From Cobb's site.

Q. Which Octane map is right for me?

A. The octane ratings listed on the map are meant to show minimum fuel requirements for optimal performance. If you have access to 94 octane, then the 93 octane map will be the best map for your requirements. Likewise, if you have access to 92 octane, then the 91 octane map will be best.

If you live or travel in areas with a wide variety of fuel qualities, then you need to use your best judgment as to the map most suited for you. These octane requirements are what are necessary when you are asking for the maximum performance from your vehicle. If you don't have access to the minimum octane requirement of your map, you simply should not push the vehicle under heavy loads until you are able to fill up with the proper octane fuel.
