If you have an automatic, there is a little fuse near the passenger side firewall that says "FWD" Put a fuse in it, and your car will temporarily be in FWD mode.

Its for emergencys only, and you shouldn't drive in FWD mode very long.

And if it is manual, you cant change it via fuse because like nkoan said, only for autos...

Why are you asking?

The question might have to do with a long trip, as FWD happens to be more efficient in terms of gas mileage. His "friend" might benefit from the shorter half-shafts coming out from the transaxle.

As we all know, less moving parts + less inertia + less weight = means better mileage.

Thats not going to help this car becuase no matter where you put the power the drivetrain still has to spin the components that link up all the wheels together.

If you get any benefit it would be very minimal imo.

your friend needs a 93 L fwd.
try checking older import magazines, they did a special about making a wrx into rear wheel drive.

The auto-tranny subies run 90% to the front wheels anyhow (at freeway speeds). So there really wouldn't be much of a point in disabling the AWD...you still have the weight to drag around.

That was a figure I got from Subaru a while back. The standard electronic AWD is 50:50 in speeds 1 and 2 and switches to 90% FWD for fuel economy in 3rd and fourth. It's definately not applicable to VTD-equipped vehicles, but it was most definatly on the mid-90s Legacy models. Since the question was asked from a guy that lists "Impreza" as his car...the info is still applicable since the 4EAT was the same in both the Legacy and base Impreza until the more advanced systems started to appear.

Cheers,

Ryan
