The differences in car enthusiast
I'm a rotary guy. I'm pretty knowledgeable in mechanics, though I have no certifications(ASE). I have been self taught...no father who was a mechanic...so I learned everything I know from the internet or friends with good rotary knowledge. Still, I love reading about what my competition is doing to their cars, so I'm a member of all the "major" forums on the net(nopistons.com, supraforums.com, freshalloy.com, honda-tech.com).
It's AMAZING to see what the different communities are doing to make their cars faster/brake harder/run cooler. I know that most if not all the rotary forums discuss things such as engine porting/rebuilding, tuning styles, different turbo setups, suspension/tires/brakes, engine swaps/modified intake manifolds....etc....Pretty in depth stuff(I myself have built my rotary engine 3 times this year, rebuild my turbo once, pulled my engine 5 times in 2 years and have tuned if for the last 2 years.)
Then I come to the honda-tech forum and read about their engine swaps, engine management issues, blahblahblah... There are a lot of really knowledgeable enthusiasts in the Honda forums....and then there are the "n00bs". They want to know about intakes, exhausts, and the occasional body kit.
Freshalloy is pretty knowledgeable, but they're being over-run from by the Honda guys turned Nissan...so now their are a TON of "n00bs" talking about their kills...makes me laugh.
The Supra Guys are older....so they can afford to pay someone to work on their 800 hp boats
(j/k). They have lots of knowledge, but I'm not sure if all of them actually do their own work.
Then I come here to learn about the Boxer/WRX/STI. I have a friend of mine who is into drag racing with his '93 WRX(LOOK AT MY LOCATION BEFORE SAYING '93 WRX'S DON'T EXIST). He bought it with a midpipe/catback as his only mods the car came with. He has since then installed an Apexi S-AFC, Apex AVC-R, intercooler water sprayer(home made), boost/EGT/Water temp/oil temp/oil pressure gauge, blahblahblah...he has a WHOLE bunch of stuff on his WRX. I figure the WRX community would be the same....What do I find? People posting how to change differential fluid! I love reading about the silencer mod confused: Some of these mods are so easy to do it's crazy that someone has to do a write up for it!
I want to know how/what I need to do to swap a STI tranny into a WRX. I want to know what type of tranny will hold over 400 ft/lbs of torque. I want to know how to change clutches.
Is the WRX Community THAT YOUNG that they have to post about their SILENCER MOD?!?!?!

I am a n00b.
If what you're saying is true, I appreciate the fact that the Subaru "community" is n00b friendly vs. others.
If you honestly want more technical info, goto www.scoobymods.com or ask around without this elitist pretense and I'm sure you'll get answers.
But somehow this reeks of troll.

The WRX has only been around a couple of years in the US. So we all have to start learning all the different things that can be done to our cars.
The Honda movement has been strong for over ten years and the the rotory even longer. So alot of Knowledge is available.
IF you have a specific question i.e. how to swap in a STI trans start a thread, I'm sure you will get an answer.
So please drop this elitest attitude if you didn't think that this forum was what you were looking for you should have just moved on instead of complaing.
P.S. At one time you were a nOOb and would have had to know how to change your dif fluid to.
P.P.S. If you are such a good mechanic why have you had to rebuild your rotory 3 times this year alone ?

I've had to rebuild my engine 3 times not for mechanical reasons, but for tuning errors. One of the times in particular, it was just pure "stupidity". I ran my -4 line(to open the wastegate) too close to my manifold and it heated it up and put a crack in it. Needless to say, I boosted 34 psi!....fastest 9 seconds of that engine's life. Another time, I was doing run after consecutive run(launch all the way to 4th gear with 9500 rpm redline shifts) and on the last run, let my exhaust temps run too high...burned a corner of an apex.
Rebuilt the engine in 3 days(all 3 times I've blown my motor) and got her back on the road. That should show I have good mechanical skills...just that I suck at as a tuner.
This is NOT a flame thread, but seriously guys(especially the really technical guys), you can't tell me that your not sick of the childish posts some people make i.e. posting "The Matrix" threads in the performance mods section, or the "I did the silencer mod" threads.
Maybe I've been part of the rotary community too long and am just used to having more technical questions like torque specs for the engine tension bolts vs. how to install a BOV.
....and how does this reek of troll if I'm POSTING?

lmfao...you guys are incredible. I repeat THIS IS NOT A FLAME THREAD. But you guys....haha....seriously, I've done my homework on WRX's and am really interested in them. Now I make a comment on how the Honda community is filled with high school kids, how all the high horsepower Supra's are owned by rich snobs...and I'm asking what do you think about the WRX owners....
...looks like you guys are making a great name for yourself already...
Show me again where I was being "abrasive"

Jspecracer7, theres something wrong with you. In your first post you expect us to be so stupid that we won't realize its possible to have a 93 wrx? We do have some brainpower, so i think we can figure out you live in Japan, where there were obviously wrxs made then, before we call you on it and say you're a liar. After all, subarus are japanese. Now, about your second post, we do have technical questions like that posted here. Have you looked in the technical forums thoroughly? Why should we have a seperate forum for noobs? They're people too. The idea of a seperate forum for people who are new to something is rediculous to me. I would explain myself more but that would be getting off topic. One last thing, the whole point of you starting this thread seems to be to show us that it is possible to characterize car enthusiasts by the car they drive. Really, that is the dumbest thing I've heard. There are rich asses here, there are dumb newbs(me), and there are also (believe it or not!) people who know more about cars than you here. So to me, right now, you look like a complete fool.
Now if you're going to stay here be nice, otherwise leave.

AWNS, great post. and now its my turn
At first I was going to **** on us for being jerks to you, but then I re-read your post and im pissed. I truely respect your goal for your WRX, your knowlede in mechanics (more than mine), and just your over all knowledge in cars. I also agree about all your comments even the ones about our club. But you are missing something: We are a NEW club! Yeah, the old I-club has been around for quite a while but the WRX is still a new car for us. Previously we only had the EJ25 and the EJ22 offered for years. 2002 was the first year that we got the EJ20 turbo motor, and though there are some experts, we have not had the time to become as "cultured" as you think the other fourms are. We ALL are noobs here! Even thouse with rediculously large post counts (IS2Scooby
) are still noobs! Almost all of us had never worked with the EJ20 powerplant before a little less than 2 years ago! True some of us had turboed EJ25's, done JDM swaps, so some had a head start but almost ALL of us are new. This is why you will find posts like how remove a silencer or W/E. SO WHAT if they dont know how to use one! They are on their never ending quest to car knowledge like you and I.
These things are the lower things on the list of things that (once I re-read) pissed me off. The biggest thing is your doubt of overall car knowledge of ours. WE REBUILD OUR ENGINES TOO! I have been inside and out and studied the WRX engine extensively on multiple cars, as have many people on this board. I assisted in building a friend's WRX up to close to 375hp, which in our world kicks ***.
I-club can help people get the info they need, if you just go with the flow. So what, we have some nOOb's but more power to them, and we try to help them out in everyway possible. Questions like your own also are answered, had you posted it with out doubting us as you did. If you have a question post it in the correct technical fourm and it WILL be answered. Have a nice Day
Cheers
-Jeff
***Let this fourm be somewhat of a reminder for people that THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GET A QUESTION ANSWERED!***

There are alot of members here who get into Subarus and dont know anything about cars at first. Knowing something about cars is not a requirement of joining this forum. If you think it should be, start your own forum.
