Box-shaped things on WRC car roof? (was: **this Might Be A Stupid Question**)
Hey guys, I've always wondered, but I wanted to know if anybody here knew what a couple of things were on a typical subaru rally car.
1) what is that little box looking thing on the roof of the subaru wrc car?? i thought it was some kind of navigation device or camera.. i dunno...
2) what exactly is the antennas on the roof for?? for navi or radio comm.??
3) Usually there are two stickers on the right side of the hood... one with a circled "E" ... i kno that's for fire extinguisher system.. but there's another one that is a triangle with a lightning bolt inside... what does that mean??
4) lastly, i know there is one main company that makes v-mount intercoolers for our availability on our cars.. but what kind of v-mount intercooler system do the subaru wrc cars have... oh, and if you guys happen to know, list some vmic companies that you know of...
Thanks guys, I am just a rally enthusiast and i have to know these things.. i wanna go for the rally/drift aspect.. not so much as that 2f2f street crap... lemme know

this doesn't help much but it gives some interesting info.
the triangle with a lightning bolt is electrical type stuff. perhaps a battery quick dis-connect?

Thread moved from EJ20 Turbo Engine forum. Your questions are too broad, covering too many topics to apply to an engine forum.
Drifting and rallying are not closely related. Both take a high degree of car control but drifting competition is an exhibition sport created for spectator viewing only, while rallying is a timed event.
1) Box-shaped thing on roof is a vent.
2) Antennas are for team radios. GPS navigational aids are not allowed, hence the team notes for each stage which are read to the driver by the co-driver.
3) The lightning bolt symbol is for electrical system shut-off switch, in case of emergencies like rollovers or other crashes that might have ruptured fuel cell or lines. Turning off electrical power means fuel pump will not continue to flood car with fuel or cause a spark from arcing wires.
4) I'm not sure what you mean by "v-mount", unless you refer to intercoolers which sit at an angle in the nose of a WRC car. This method is not as efficient as a front-mount intercooler, in which air proceeds in a straight line in the direction the car is travelling. Angled radiators and other coolers are a compromise in a WRC car because of limited space for the size and number of coolers they use.
Angled radiators were used for many years in older Corvette Stingrays because of the low hood line in front. Because an angled core is less efficient for airflow, the core was made very thick in the high-performance models, often at least 3" thick, compared with most modern cars with a radiator core only half that thickness.

meh, im pretty sure that one above is a camera... too small to be anything else, plus air scoops (for cabin ventilation) are in the middle (codriver needs air too) and are about 3 times that size.
ok.. so i am getting that its the camera and the IIRC GPS device.... which one is it, because if not the camera... then where is the camera.. the antennas seem to be more like for gps & radio since there are two... hmmm. ... i don't know..

That thing on top
The grey box is the camera, its also holds a GPS transmitter so the team knows where the car is at all times. The GPS is primarily used for Virtual Spectator, its how they get the graphics positioned correctly. I got this information from either the 2004 or 2005 wrap up DVD.
Only on the hot rallies will you see roof vents, sometimes they even use A/C.
The radiator in the new WRC Subaru is mounted at an angle and sits below the intercooler. Subaru World rally Team website has this info.
