It seems kind of implausible to me that an essentialy FWD car would have snap oversteer related to the suspension, especially since the problem seemed to happen only at high speed. Also, for all the flak Audi gets about that wing, one has to wonder why it's there if not to deal with lift issues.

My original source was Car magazine (a UK auto rag), but if you google it you might be able to find the article. The TT is a front or AWD vehicle, but the problem (if I recall properly) was due to the weight transfer forward being to high (or something along those lines) when people lifted off the gas in high (autobahn) speed corners.

Yeah, I did some more digging also and came up empty. If memory serves me Car said that it was due to the Audi suspension boys wanting to give what is essentially a FWD (even w/ Quattro) car handleing characteristics closer to a RWD. As such they dialed in a heavier rear sway bar (my guess, not the Mags) so the tail would come out first. It was that, coupled with the weight transfer from unloading the rear end under de-accelleration, and the lower (effective) weight of the rear (due to lift) that caused the problem. The recall included (at least in Europe) a modified rear suspension, along with that annoying little wing.
The article also noted that the accidents that did occur were also partially a drivers error thing. (i.e they did something stupid and the car bit them.) But since personal responsability seems to have gone the way of the Dodo....
Mind you my recollection could be WAY off.

I'm an evolutionary biologist and to make your statement correct about the dodo I would add that "where humans caused the extinction of the dodo, lawyers caused the extinction of personal responsibility." Granted some sociologist will have something to say about that but then again sociology is a pseudo science so...
sorry for the OT

Sure, but then you will have 4 holes in your trunk...
I actually feel the same way about the tail. What I will probably do is find a nice, short after market and sell it to a STI wan-a-bee. In other words, a WRX owner...

Offtopic but...
I just heard back from my local Subie dealer (Carsen Subie in Redwood Citt, CA) and they were expecting July for first deliveries, but hadn't made a determination about above MSRP markup.
I'm hoping for $31K + $0 markup, but then again I'd also like to be able pick up Jennifer Garner in a bar...

let subaru hear your gripes
FYI...i don't like the wing either, so i gave a suggestion yesterday on the subaru web-site (http://www.subaru.com/home.html, up on the "Home" tab, go to "Contact Subaru", and choose "Product Recommendations") and got the following response today:
Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your interest in a 2004 WRX STi. We do not yet have all of the specifications for the 2004 WRX STi. So, I do not know if this spoiler is standard or optional or if we will be offering another rear spoiler for the 2004 WRX STi.
We appreciate that you took the time to give us your comments. We will forward them to our Product Planning Department for their future consideration. In the past, input from our owners has been helpful in initiating changes to our newer models. We hope to continually improve our products and appreciate your recommendations.
Maybe if enough "buyers" express aversion toward the 3rd row of seats on the trunk (my friends call it the "church pew") they will offer a no-cost dealer swap-out. who knows, subaru has surprised me before. how many car companies do you know that would redesign a new model 2 years into the 5-6 year cycle b/c a vocal part of the public didn't like the way the front end/headlights looked?

The Church Pew
Added my comments...
There have been a number of discussions about the 2004 STI for the US and all seem to lead to the Tail or commonly known as the Church Pew. We are not sure what your plans are as of today, but we would like to express our opinion. If it is possible, It would be nice if there was an alternative tail for buyers over 30 like myself. Like one from the RS. I am not saying we are going have the dealer refund our deposits due to this. But It would be a nice dealer swap option. Thank you for your consideration to this matter.

and the answer...
Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your inquiry. We do not yet have the final specifications for the 2004 WRX STi. So, I do not know if the rear spoiler will be standard or optional or if another spoiler will be available for the 2004 WRX STi. We should have full specifications late this spring. Please feel free to contact us again at that time.
