Will you be able to delete the rear spoiler on the Sti?

Never owned a Subaru but the Sti is one of three cars I'm considering. The styling of WRX's doesn't do much for me but the performance of an Sti definitely commands my attention. The wife doesn't care for the boy racer wing on the back of the Sti so I'm wondering if it can be deleted? It might actually be performance necessary on this car, no? Could you replace with a more tame aftermarket unit if it is an aero necessity? Thanks for your help.
P.S. What are the big guns as far as aftermarket goes? Looking for the bigger companys that have a proven reputation and have been around for a while.

I am guessing it cannot be deleted from the factory from what I have read.
Is that huge wing needed...maybe not to that level but something is...for the performance of the vehicle...think Audi TT problems with no rear spoiler.
I have a 911 and originally it had no tail...it felt floaty at speeds over 120. I added the tail on the back and now if feels solid at 150mph and above. As an aside the front spoiler and the rear are matched from the factory in that you don't want one without the other or ill handling effects may result. Not sure if the STi is the same or not, but something to keep in mind.
In short you can certainly modify it once you get it and after market may be the way to go...but I would stick something back there.

Nolift911, were definitely thinking along the same lines. I'm well aware of increasing/decreasing downforce at one end must be compensated at the other. If the Sti wasn't such a perfomance monster I'd probably assume I could just remove the wing. But what I'm wondering (great TT example) is how much is the wing for boy racer appearance and how much necessity?

Boko,
I hear ya. The thing that is odd to me is that the group of individuals that are actually intertested in this car. Many are coming from the German ranks and other high quality performance marque type vehicles. I wonder if they did their demographic research? You would think a variant might be an option on a 32-35k car. Like Mitsu.
The wing is functional but it is boy racer compared to what we are all used to and is deemed acceptible for street use and not purely track.
After seeing the car in person it def made me feel better it goes with the monster hood scoop and not as bad as I first thought.

I also asked the sales person about deleting the rear wing, and he didn't think it would be possible. I am thinking I am going to trade someone with a same color WRX trunk lids, I hope they will be compatible.

Wow Jeff! You read between the lines pretty well. I have an '01 Boxster S (not daily driver) and need to get a car for the wife. Unfairly I'm trying to push her into something I'd like also. We're also considering a new M3. Being a car fanatic I'd hate to drive a M3 through the salt and snow but, the Sti having 4 wheel drive and being 20k less would make that much more palatable. Just started surfing here and seems to be a pretty good forum. Any other forums I should check for Sti info? thanks.
when I "dream" about getting an sti, what I will do is take off the whole trunk assemble, and trade it with other people with the regular spoiler, and some $$$$. of course I will take that "sti" badge off as well.
same thing as the wheels, I don't really think they look that great, and they are like 799 apiece according to the other thread, so i will sell those wheels, and get some volks instead.

Boko,
Ha! I am/was looking at an M3. The girly has a 323i right now and that is going...my Jeep beats up on that poor thing in a straight line. European performance sedan my a$$. I dragged her out to test drive a WRX and said add 75hp and other assorted goodies and you have a Scooby STi. She said no wing...I said no workie, she said Silver...I agreed.
Boxster S eh? Now you are talking...sweet car. I have driven the regular Boxster many times, very balanced and forgiving. Throw it in and hold on. Excellent car.
My 911 Carrera is setup for the track and is esentially a garage queen while my Jeep Grand Cherokee handles the daily driving duties...which goes to the girly, we ditch the BMW and I get the STi ;-) Yeah dawg!
Anyway the M is sweet but for performance who can justify the extra 20k? Prestige? Please.
I wonder what 20k of mods will do to my STi? ;-)

In regards to the downforce balancing issue:
I remember seeing a pic of an STi parked in a lot in japan, and it had no canards. Then i remembered that something came off the bumper as an option on the subaru accessory site, was it those? Because if it is, just rip off the front canards+extensions and take the wing off, and problem solved (although it means you have less downforce overall, as opposed to an excess on the front)
On the other hand, i have no idea how much force the front is supposed to apply and how much the back is supposed to apply, there might still be a downforce discrepency in the positive or negative spectrum.

Quote from "CAR" magazine
British "CAR" magazine had this to say about the EVO VI Makinen. I think it hits the nail right on the head and applies equally well to the STI.
"Only nine-to-15-year-old boys love how they look, but they don't buy them. Owners don't love the looks, either, certainly not sufficiently for the purchase to have been made on the strength of it. No, a Makinen is entirely about what it does. If you have time to even notice, never mind take delight in, the quality of the interior, you're not using it properly."

When I was in London I saw the Evo VI Mackinen edition parked on the street. I thought it was pretty crazy and wanted one ever since.
I guess since I watch rally and love the sport the looks of these cars to me is just awesome.
The drawbacks are the poser ricer crowd that tack wings and other crap on these things for looks(dunno why) which make us look like the same thing, unless you actually know the difference.
It boils down to I really don't care what others think about my car, I am all about function, and I believe the STi will function with the best of them.

TT Issues
I just want to clarify a bit about what was said regarding the snap oversteer problems with the TT. The high speed oversteer issue was more of a suspension derived promblem than an aerodynamic one. Audi added the spoiler more as an afterthought than as a solution to the root cause.
But I agree with the rest of you, I can live without the boy racer look.
Cheers,
-E2
