Why The Limitation In # Here?

The friggin US dealers are starting the "chops licking contest already !!!" mmmboy do they do that well or what? They're rehearsing their lines already..."hey buddy! you don't take it at this price somebody else will !!!" Not exactly the kind trained to deal with sophistication. I don't know whether or not the exporters in Japan realize what a Pandora's box the're opening by sending us just 5000 STI !!!

I think that time will show that 5000 is more than enough. This is a car that will not appeal to most buyers - only those that crave AWD and obscene performance numbers in place of luxury and sophisticated syling. At a $30,000 + price, dealers will not be able to mark this car up after the fanatics who "had to have the first one off the boat" get their cars.
I predict that many dealers will have a few sitting on their lots by October / November and be more than willing to deal at, or lower than, MSRP.

I definitely understand people’s frustration with dealers. Many of them are out for the extra buck no matter what. Some will no doubt gouge their pounds of flesh from whomever they can. So it seems unfair for Subaru to limit the production so these vermin can carve us up. But Subaru is a business. It is their business to stay profitable. We here are enthusiast and pretty much all have the desire for the STi. Along with the desire, unfortunately there has to be means to realize it. How many are actually going to pony up 35K(tax-tag-reg) for it? Beyond the enthusiasts that have the means to buy what is essentially a sopped up econobox, what other people are in the market for this thing? If they make 5,000, they will probably sell them all. If they make 10,000 STi, how many will collect dust on their lots. As a business, if I were them, I would not create that kind of risk for my shareholders. As a consumer, I will not pay a penny over MSRP. If you wait or do a little leg work you could probably find someone willing to deal for MSRP. Your money, your vote.

Whipsaw,
I have to disagree to some extent...........IF SOA only import 5000 units per annum then the number of STis arriving in '03 will be ~2500. My local dealer is the third largest Subaru dealer in the US and they are only getting 10 STis this year (and their current waiting list exceeds 60 people).
Possibly dealers who mark-up the car substantially (out West, for example) may have STis languishing on their lots for some time but any being sold at MSRP will be snapped up in '03. People who are not already high on a waiting list will either have to wait until '04 or pay exorbitant prices to get one (or be extremely lucky).
The situation this time next year may well be very different......if you think you'll find them sitting on lots by October/November this year, with dealers asking MSRP or below, then I think you're going to be very disappointed.............

You may be right. It's just my opinion that 5000 will probably satisfy demand. I also have to believe that is Subaru's opinion as well - they have nothing to gain by not meeting what they perceive to be the demand for the STI based upon their market research.
If they are wrong, and sales prove stronger out of the gate, then they will probably step up production. They did this with the WRX in 02. Initially they had announced only 10,000 WRX's, then sold over 14,000.
I just don't think it will be necessary to "pay-up" to an aggressive dealer unless you absolutely need to have it this summer. Even then, it may not be necessary - clearly there are already some dealerships guaranteeing MSRP.

MSRP for STI
We already know that MSRPs and "invoice prices" are fabricated anyway, so, 35K for a true rally car is not bad at all. The real hitch here is, NO answers at all from dealers I contacted, period. Usually, I do mean usually, when you are ready to plunk down this kind of money with car dealers you at least expect an eyebrow or two to go up. Nothing! I have never had this kind of "no response" before, unless of course their waiting list is so long they just won't bother. Go figure......

I don't think the dealerships know very much yet so I wouldn't get to upset yet. Official pricing has not been announced, so there is not much they can do. You can also throw a lot of money at them right now, but most can't take that either since they don't actually have a car to give you.
Sure some dealerships like to throw up a big board in their showrooms with names of people on the waitlist, but a lot of that is meaningless. You'd be surprised how many people drop off the waitlist on those things when push comes to shove. You can move from 45 to 12 real fast. The waitlist thing is used to help build hype and excitement about a hot new entry as much as it is a way of keeping track of who is in line.
Also, don't expect to find many knowledgable salesmen either. The best info you can get about the STI will usually come from these forums, or calling SOA. Most salesmen don't give a rats about what they are selling, and are rarely as enthused about the STI as you will be. Just last month, the guy was probably working at a Kia dealership.

KIA is right! :-)
just from having an SHO (V8 taurus) I can already tell what kind of ******* the STI is going to get when left for service at a dealer. This STI may be a Subaru but it's quite a piece of engineering. Being from europe I know first hand how tough these rally cars have to be. Imagine a mechanic going from an outback to an STI (or worse from a Kia). makes you sort of shutter at the thought.
I agree with you on the waiting list. I'll bite my time and see. This is one car that is worth it. I don't usually play, but, the thought of scortching an M3 or two appeals to me a lot!
