What suspension will you put on your STI?
Bilstein, Prodrive,Cusco,Tein,KYB,..........
what type of ride do you want.
I willl most likely do a Prodrive lowering spring. They lower the car 25 mm and still allow the shock to work within it's designed range.
I will certainly wait until they are available for the US STi, as it will obviously have the 2.5 liter.
Then again after the sales Ride and Drive, I may feel it's fine.
( all Subaru salespeople who sold alot of WRX's will get to go to an event held by Subaru to show the new product. Usaully held at a track, with Pro drivers and some autocrossing.)
Last one was out in Arizona in March of 2001. I will take pictures and post for all to see.
ANYWAY..... lets see your thought on Suspension mods.

STOCK! From the things I've read the STI suspension gives the best compromise between all out handling while allowing the car to still be driver comfortably on the highway.
Also, For rallycrossing I like to run in the stock class. Since most people run a Rallycross with two 4wd classes (one for stock and one for modified) it leaves the window wide open in the modified class. I've already seen 500hp eclipses and Galants show up at a rally cross. So, for that fact I'll keep it stock and still beat a 500hp mitsu
Bottom line is that it depends on what you want to do. Personally my STI will see as much dirt as pavement, and for that fact I don't want to lower it, and I need a suspension that is a good middle ground for autocrossing and rallycrossing. So plain STI suspension will do. Other wise I'd be going with the DMS 50mm shocks and springs from MRT. That's what we run on our rally car and they are awesome! They will take more abuse than you can throw at them and keep on going.

OMG... the STi suspension is a near $2000 option on the WRX!
We get the STi suspension (and from what it appears, an upgraded one at that) included!! That's like paying for the WRX upgrade option, then taking them off.
Unless you're really into tracking (which is fine) I'd leave them on.
This is for me, of course. The only thing I would change is that if STi comes out with some aftermarket lowering springs that lower the car a tad, I'll think about that. No other company's products are touching the suspension on my car

I would advise waiting to make this decision. It will take a lot of track time to really understand how to better match the suspension to your preferences. It appears that you have a fair amount of track experience, so I'm sure you already have a good sense of what your looking for.
If you buy a kit with enough adjustment this is less of an issue. I imagine that the STi coil-overs that were shown at the TAS would be a pretty well balanced option. I will probably go with a Proflex or Ohlins tarmac set-up, but I have also decided to go whole hog with seam-welding and a roll cage ... I wouldn't recomend going this stiff without fortification... it will rattle the car apart.
This car is actualy replacing a car that saw 90% of its miles on the track ... so my view may be a little lop-sided.

Suspension mods
Well,..that was very refreshing ! Thank you guys for helping me keep all the options open. I cant choose between making the car all out badd to the bone , or keeping it OEM. I spoke someone today about Ohlins and Motons. I may become a Moton Dealer soon ! They offer a cheaper version of their aluminum body race coilover that still has a separate resevoir with compression and rebound adjustments. I drove an Audi in Grand-am practice at 24hrs of Daytona that had these installed and they feel like a soft bilstein around the paddock, and very stiff and predictable on the track ! My best friend is still calculating how much it would cost to build an STI racecar for Speedvision World Challenge GT. So far were estimating around 75k each !! Thats 430 hp, 245-18's,cage,drysump,dogshifter,(not WRC sequential)Motons, 15 inch AP's(brakes) and would have to carry 100lbs of ballast.
Around the same weight as last years Audi S4. Less the financial backing of Champion and Audi Sport. Can you say 4 year development plan !! Can you say 100k a copy and back of pack for the whole first year. and add in two 45 ft bearclaw trailors, two F450 superstokes and 5 guys per car,..grand total,...........
Anyway it can easily get out of control,..the best way for us to determine its (STI) capabilities wil lbe to see if the stock STI can do less than a 1:27 at Summit Point Raceway. We'll go from there,..as for my suspension,....I still dont know. If I could get the compression and rebound specs on the stock suspension I could match spring rates on some Ohlins or Motons and have a special setting called "stock". As I learned along time ago, no-one wants to give that info up, cause it's just like someone saying,." hey now that you spent all that time figuring it out, just turn it over to me,.." NOT. So back to square one.
Thanks for the great responses guys,..
Rallykeith, tell me more about the DMS coilovers, how are they on tarmac and hard compound tires?

Well, I've/we only run one real tarmac event, the local Solo 1 hillclimb. Plus we run a 96 stock impreza with that whole 146hp. Basically I can't tell you crap. Since the race is a hill climb you're always fighting gravity and the car doesn't have enough power to make up for lifting the slightest bit too early, which is real easy to do when you don't have the funds to replace the car that you didn't pay for. I can tell you that they are very very stiff at low to medium speeds on tarmac. Alomst to the point of making a ralliest sick. We know a lot of people that run them on their rally cars with much success. I can tell you that we've bent ri mafter rim, bent control and A-arms, and even rolled the car, with never once damaging the DMS strut assemblies. Probably something to do with the fact that they have a 50mm piston. As for a tarmac car, they probably aren't the way to go. Can't remember off the top of my head, but you only get something like 4 re-bound settings while having 12 bump settings. Here is a link to the different DMS options MRT has.

I have hopes the dealerships offer an option for an STi coil over setup with adjustable shocks, just to allow it as a stock classification.
That would make it a perfect daily driver to stop of at the track, autocross, or rallycross with on any given weekend and most likely be given a little trophy like souvenier for the ride home.

But on suspension, stock all the way. The Sti parts are included already. This will be including inverted struts (on brochure), pillow mounts, stiffer sus bushings, springs, etc. I'm sure that after a while, if a person decides to race with an Sti, then you'll see options pop up for you. I usually look at tricked out Stis in Japanese mags like Option or Option2 and swoon at mods that I'll never be able to afford. Maybe those magazines may have some mod suggestions after a while. It doesn't take long. If the car is really wanted before the real launch, then they deliver to one of these tuners and have them go at it before the car is even released to the public.

H&R Coilovers! (I wish!)
I have not shopped the Subaru market much yet, so I am hoping to learn a lot from others here. H&R is one of our sponsors, so it would be really nice if they came out with something for the STi. If they don' t, I guess I will be looking for a new suspension sponsor! http://www.racingforthechildren.org
