What is the manual's recommended octane rating?

Everyone claims 94 octane is what must be run in the STi but this octane is not readily available. For me, I literally live right beside as Esso station (Essogas, get it) but it only offers 91 octane as it's premium blend. It wouldl be stupid for me to have to drive somewhere else to fill up. So I ask owners... what does the manual say? I am seriously considering holding off my purchase because of alleged pinging and knocking rumors that have been going around the forums... heat, humidity, high revs and low octabe seem to be the potential culprits to this problem...if it is a problem.
you're crazy... you live in TO where 94 octane is readily avail but because there's an esso close to your house you're thinking of putting off purchasing the STi ?
Do you always fill up by your house ? I sure don't... I just fill up where-ever I am and low on fuel... BUT you DO have to look for Sunoco and a few other brands...

94 octane IS NOT readily availbale in Toronto. I have looked at other brands too and Sunoco is the only one with 94 octane and there are none near me. petro canada, shell, and esso all have 91 as the highest octane.
And yes, I am reconsidering my purchase of the Sti. As a matter of fact, I'm calling my dealer tomorrow (who has my car sitting there now) and telling him to sell it to someone else until I have clear answers and have gotten more feed back from other owners about this alleged pinging problem. Besides that, my current car STILL has not sold.

no pinging
Hello Essogas:
no pinging on my first tank new from the dealer. The dealer could only tell me premium although I'm sure the boys in the back could have filled me in on the octane if I wasn't in such a hurry to start driving.
There are a lot of Sunoco stations in Toronto although maybe not so many downtown.
I've researched gas quality a bit here in Southern Ontario. Unfortunately we've got some really high sulphur levels allowed in our gas. Refineries were running close to the legal maximum for a while. Esso lawyers fought long and hard not to have the sulphur levels released to the general public.
Over the last while Esso had very high if not the highest sulphur numbers from what I remember.
I figure my catalytic converter has to work hard enough anyway so I've been using Sunoco as it did have the lowest sulphur numbers (they claim less than 50 parts per million) and they use approximately 10% ethanol which makes it even cleaner burning than their competitors.

I don't work for Sunoco but I love their fuel. They've always been oriented towards performance cars.
Essogas - you must buy an STi! I'm having way too much fun and I want to see more of these bullets on the road.
Hey, maybe someone will buy you this for your birthday!

Hey Phun,
Good to hear you love the car! What do you like the most about it? So are you always filling up at Sunoco, I guess?
Would you recommend an octane booster additive to have on hand if one couldn't get the required octane level?
I would love to get the STi but I have to sell my current car first. It's been close to two weeks on the market now and I have not even had one call!

Yeah, I heard you've had trouble selling your current ride - good luck!
I've never used octane boosters even on higher performance engines.
I really don't think you'll have trouble finding Sunoco's 94. Pioneer has 93 on hand in the Toronto area as well.
Cheers
