When you are dropping $30K on a car, you want to explore all your options on what is available... the 03 Cobra and the STi are really close in price!
Plus, the Cobra is not a DRAG machine, it weighs a ton, it just happens to make tons of horsepower stock.
1/4 times are NOT the devil people!!!!
However, mod for mod, the 03 Cobra will be much faster than the STi.

Both are passenger cars that people CHOOSE to modify and if they both cost almost the same price, then they are comparable in that sense.
What don't you understand about people wanting to see what their money can buy?
Car buyer on the market: "If I spend $30K approximatly, what can I buy?"
This person will have a choice of several cars including an EVO, STi, Cobra and possibly more that I am not thinking of at this time. All these cars are sports cars with differences, but that is up to the individual buyer to choose.
Not everyone that buys an STi will ONLY autoX. Not everyone that buys a Cobra will ONLY drag race.

I agree with Turboniam. If I end up buying an STI, the only place it would really ever see any action is at redlights or on the interstate. I do quite a bit of interstate driving (~2000 miles a month) . While I would not drive an STI or Cobra most of the time (drive a beater), I would like for the car I buy to best suit my driving habits and the opportunities it would have to perform.
A 350Z track can cost nearly $40k after it is all paid for, it handles well, has decent power and brakes. I would not buy one though, because I am looking for something with more stock HP and TQ and more immediate potential. I am aware of many, many people who mod Stangs and Cobras, and I have come to this forum to learn more about the WRX and WRX STI to see what the aftermarket and performance is like for them. I like what I see so far.
For a big WRC fan and rally enthusiast, I can understand not ever considering owning a Cobra. Different strokes for different folks.
I am glad to hear everybody's opinion on all the different vehicles out there. That way I can make an informed decision before I buy my next car. I originally posted the Cobra info just as an FYI. It is interesting to learn how others are making power. Hope everybody has a nice day.

Interesting debate.
The thing is how far can you modify the cars, since that's what I plan to do.
I know the Evo can put out around 370 bhp with an ECU and boost control, how far can you take the STI? 400?
Also, 300 is better than 271, but that isnt a lot per litre if you do the calculation, 271bhp for 2l is 135.5 bhp per litre, and 300bhp for 2.5l gives you 120 bhp per litre.

I am getting the Sti, because I like going skiing a lot. It's 4wd... and you don't need chains! Take a 1000hp Mustang up there, and you will still need to put on chains! So, there are people out there who are getting the Sti for its specific functionalities! My 2cents!

The EVO was dynoed at 180 whp on Shivs dyno, (three evo8s all were within 3hp of each other), thats only 20 more than a stock WRX, doesn't look like the EVO has that much potential running 8.8compression and 19PSI of boost! Mitsu has ovverated this car it seems. Looks like the STi is going to clean up!

Shiv's Evo run was on a state-of-the art dyno which is known to put out conservative figures.....plus it was on 91 octane gas. He seems to think it's running from the factory with around 241 bhp on 91 octane, as opposed to the 271 bhp Mitsu claims.
Before we start deriding the Evo, let's see what the STi puts down relative to SOA's figures.....Shiv is obviously a highly-regarded WRX tuner, so I'm sure he'll be in-line for one of the first STis and I'm sure we'll see side-by-side dyno runs (ad nauseum) for the Sti versus Evo from a variety of sources. I don't doubt that the stock STi will "easily" surpass these stock Evo numbers...........so what (?); they are both fantastic cars with fantastic potential for tuning.

I think the STI will put down about 210-220 on shivs dyno. It is a VERY conservitive dyno, yes, but also a work of art
I saw a WRX run on that dyno with just a boost controler and a full catless exhaust system (headers/uppipde/downpipe/catback) get 209 to the wheels which was very surprizing. I bet the EVO could do well dyno wise with just exhaust work and ECU reprograming, and that the STI will have even more dramatic effects with those types of mods

I think the new EVO is a fantastic Performer!!! Stop.
Mitsubishi Dealers and the factory warranty work is very well known and documented on virtually any DSM board or Mitsubishi board. The WORST on this Planet. The common term, by DSMers, for Mitsubishi Dealers is, "SATAN". I own a DSM, and have dealt with thier "its your fault" approach to warranty work, and this worries me.
After watching what the DSM guys are paying for the EVO. ($5K+) over MSRP. I think the STI will actually be less money.
They are both great cars !! Choose wisely and do your research. I will guarantee, either one, will be a kick in the ***!!
Good Luck, Jerry C
