Sti 2004 2.5!!!!!!
Just a thought
According to the STI link on the main page of the I-club, the STI will have a 2.5 Liter engine. just by curiosity, I went to the Japenese subaru website and checked the japenese STI version. It still have a 2.0 Liter engine which makes me wonder if the one coming to america is just for the american market or the link's information is just wrong...
Any thoughts about that?
The japenese subaru link is the following

What are you talking about? I think you're confusing yourself.
Here's the scoop, plain and simple... The japanese and european STi has a 2.0 liter running high turbo boost. Too high to pass our emmission laws. Apparently Subaru realizes how much we hate the "watered-down" versions of japanese performance cars we always get shipped. So, to make up for the lower horsepower our cars will be making because we have to run lower boost, Subaru is putting a 2.5 liter engine in the US ones.
Does it sound more realistic to you now?

boost tolerance
ok, this is my first sheepish post here since I'm slinking back into interest in the STi after becoming disheartened by the evo 8.
I am wondering if anyone knows which block they built the 2.5 from and if it will tolerate the boost that we want to put in it?
(ie 2+ bar)?

Prepare to be amazed
I was at the Detroit Auto Show on 1/7 and saw the real deal and talked to Subaru officials:
Relevant details are already posted elsewhere at iclub...the engine is 2.5L and it significantly reinforced with sodium valves, variable valve timing, etc...gobs of low end torque is assured...subaru chap says at least 4.7s (remember they said 6.4s for the WRX..)...it looks great and BAD...lots of very high tech including a very advanced braking system currently available only on Merc SL500 and a couple of other $100k sports cars!...
the Super Sport ABS is said to dramatically reduce understeer in agressive cornering (a Porsche official confirmed this)...the 3 diffs + SSABS will ensure some of the fastest lap times in ANY production car (excl Enzo and other super exotics)..target was to match 911 Turbo around a track (this may be stretching it a bit on the Subie chaps part...)
the best part for me was the Mitsu Evo chaps quote when I asked him (tongue in cheek) whether he thought the Evo would be faster/sell better and he said "No way, we are screwed..we just have to pray enough people buy it before the STi is introduced"

economically speaking, it is the BEST thing they could have done. people are lining up (first alocation will be gone soon probably), and they probably stole 20-25% of the evo buyers from mitsu.
makes perfect sense to me...

ps it IS coming. the US web site advertises the motor, and the brochures are being printed. there is no "what ifs" here. the new STi is the real deal.

If you don't like the price of the STi.. You could always buy a 300hp Lexus SC2003 for ~60k US.. Sure the STi has AWD, seating for 5, and a better saftey rating.. But the Lexus has the appeal of draining your bank account faster than an ex-wife gone mad.

Tom..
Why do we have a 2.5? So we can have as much hp as the rest of the STI's. BEcause of emmisions we cant have as much boost, so to compensate we have higher displacement, so we actually come out with more torque than the other countries. Overall we have a better powerplant than the rest of the world. When was the last time you heard that about a *** car!?

That's a fine theory.. But what if the 2.5L is maxxed out at 300hp? What if it's actually safer to use the better built 2.0L block to go past the 300hp mark? That's actually how it used to be, and I think it still is?
Besides all that.. Isn't the point of huge power from a 2.0L engine all about racing your local Mustang to the gas station and leaving him behind because you don't need to stop? IMHO it's more impressive to pull more power out of lower displacement. I laugh like a giddy school girl when someone says "Only a 2.0L engine?".
