Its basic physics. But there are some potential limiters; gearing and wind resistance.
In this case the EVO and STI are nearly the same in both areas so it all comes back to the good ole' power to weight ratio.
I don't think alot of these new shool gearheads realize this as being a basic fundemental. They just think HP is the great cure all for everything. P/W and low wind resistance is key on speed trials testing as well as any _real_ kind of racing event (non-street or bracket racing).
In theory, the EVO _could_ spank the STi in a straight line race (1/4 or 0-60) with its current P/W if only its wind resistance rating was much more slippery. Something like I don't know....the G35's 0.29 or the new '04 Prius at 0.27. (?)
If I were an EVO owner I would be working on reducing my wind resistance and frontal area asmuch as possible. Taping up any unnecessary air entries and such. The big problem though is that FMIC. It's going to act like a huge air brake. A TMIC even with Subie's soccer goal style hood scoop is going to provide less resistance than the EVO's catficsh mouth grill. Its cheap and easy horsepower that could be to some applied without drwaing too much attention (aka 'sleeper'!). I'd even go so far as to install light weight and very aero rims with a tradeoff of low rolling resistance to skidpad grip. When racing in a straight line your ability to skate on a skidpad does not come into play.
I'd also maybe fabricate an air dam system of thin/cheap plastic for intallation at the rear of the car between the bumper assy and under the trunk/fuel tank area where air tends to get captured and resist escape slowing down the car.
BTW the G35 aero kit otion completely negates this problem resulting in a measured zero lift and drag from underneath the car. Impressive for a luxury car.

But the FMIC is oh so cool and popular right now. I don't see anyone breaking the trend in favor of function over 'style'.
But I will look into doing similar cheap, easy, hideable and effective mods when I get my STi (assuming I don't go G35).

I used 93 Mobil/ Shell/ Amoco gas, take your choice (1/4 tank at the time). My car has the sunroof and I'm 205lbs, so the weight was right at 3500lbs.
Based off a calculation of my 1/8 mile time/mph, my 0-60 was 4.62.

Hello,
I just joined this forum...

Welcome and thanks for the informative post with evidentual numbers and info for your runs.
Taking your information at face value it seems you and the other owner you mention may in fact have some freaking fast *** EVO's.
I wonder, what fuel were you running and where is the track located.
I'm not going to take a jab at ya like I did 'Cary', though he had it coming.
I'm just curious and I'm sure the rest of the folks in this thread are too.
Your quoted times are very interesting though.
Hmmm...
Keep us looped of your progress with your upcoming round of proposed 'tricks'. BTW, just for the record I'm not a Subie fan because the STi has more power or whatever. I've been a Subie fanatic one since before there was even such a ting as STi or an Impreza. If the roles had been reveresed (Mitsu 300 & Subie 271) my heart would still be beating Subie blue blood.
In all seriousness both vehicles are excellent values and terrific specimens of their individual marques. All the better for we enthusiasts.
Again welcome and thanks for the info!

Thanks Janq,
I look forward to the STI's arrival. You never know, I may talk my fiance' in to buying one and getting rid of her Eclipse (she hates the heavy-*** deck lid and the 'fall in the car' height.
The "tricks" I was refering to could be done on any vehicle. Setting up a car for the 1/4 mile vs road-course vs daily driving has it's differences. Just need to be in the sport a while to know the little things that can get you quicker ET's and a higher MPH. But, just to clarify, nothing was done to my car to reach the posted times.
Seeya,
Dave
Forgot, Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, MI. I also run at US131 Dragway about 90min south of Stanton and both tracks have, in the past, been consistantly close to one another in terms of ET and mph. The track isn't a fluke track (both are NHRA/IHRA sanctiond). The Motorplex is 600ft above sea level if your interested.

I think here is the link for silencer's run.

Those were slips.
Most of you guys should believe and be happy. The STi has 29 more HP and shorter gears. High 12's should be possible.

nice run !
Dragging for 19 years can sure earn you respect.
but. what i am trying to say (for eternity here) those cars are not designed for 1/4 miles..
dont' you think it's a huge waste of time we are so hooked up on those numbers?
both cars are excellent.. we should be happy just becaue there are here in the states..
we need to stop bragging and head out that rally trail.

Last time I checked this is a Subaru forum... so naturally opinions are going to be Subaru biased.
Numbers don't mean a thing to me... If you're here to post how much greater the STi is than the Evo guess what... they're pretty much the same.
My last car had 340HP stock but only has been known to run 13.3 1/4 miles and 5 sec 0-60's. Why? It the rest of the car... not just a few numbers that make one car better than another.
yes yes I now own an Evo. Lemme tell you it's is a fast car. I've done a few mods to it which brings it over STi's stock numbers and still haven't spent more than $30,995. But that's not my point, because when I misshift your STi is going to blow me away, think about that.
When my friend gets his STi I'll be very happy for him. Besides, it's gonna be harder to get an STi is it not?
We're going to have a ball showing who's boss to all those M3's, Z06's, SVT's, etc. Rock on Scoobies...

the only way an sti will lose to the evo in a 1/4 is if the driver is a noob, durrr otherwise u talking about 300hp at 6000rpm!!! and 300lbs/ft torque!! at 4000rpm!!!!!!!! that is more torque and hp than the evo, dunt mess wit the sti, u c those cheesy mitsubishi commercials with trance music n all. there aint any cheesy subaru commercials that ive seen.

300lbs/ft of torque at 4000rpm, ima rev that baby up at least 4000rpm, its overs basically, good driver in evo vs good driver in sti, id bet on the sti, as shown in the racing videos, sti smokes the evos off the lines. because 300lbs/ft torque.

As much as I'd like to see that happen, I think the chance is pretty slim, IMHO (stock for stock).
Lighter, more powerful, more torque, better Cd.
That's why I'm also pondering between the STi (#4 on waiting list)and a used 2002 Z06.
Disclaimer: Not dissing the STi at all, just trying to keep it real.

if i had an sti id hit up any car, m3, porches, evos, m5, zo6, cause most likely most people with nice cars still dont know how to drive their car to the full potential
