id like to see honda/acura and nissan come out with something new, honda needs like a new turbo type R or something and nissan needs to their bring out their AWD skyline version.
Subaru is top dawg of the 4bangers and V6's and V8's.

i don't know about this whole quality of the evo being worse then the STi. First of all i own a WRX and i agree when i got my car it was a whole new world of driving. i would jsut go driving for hours jsut to drive. The feel of beating some a$$hole in a camaro with my 4 door family car is amazing. I pulled up to these 2 guys in a early 90's camaro and asked them to race. They responded saying "what did you steal your moms car?" so we raced. 1 minute later we stopped at the next light and i looked over at them, and they were both facing forward and would not look at me. I loved it!
BUT!! even though i love my wrx i can not say it is reliable. i know tons of people that have had problems with the WRX. Tranny shudder, 4th gear syncros and just all around lousy attitude from Subaru dealerships. this is all with a proven engine and drive train.
Now you are comparing a brand new engine...well pretty much brand new...and a new car and you are saying that you think the STi is giong to have less problems than the Evo....i doubt it.
Also i have already seen 2 Evo's and i do have to say...you can't judge it by pictures. It looks so much more bad *** in real life. It doesn't have that whole squished look like in pictures.
I am not saying i like the Evo better...i am just saying they are both so equal and Evo isn't any worse as far as repairs as the WRX or STi will be.
Ok thats enough THE END!

Here's a slightly different twist on this discussion from a WRX and STi fan....
The STi is a great technical accomplishment and I myself was seriously considering getting one, but there are a few things that I observed that disuaded me and it had nothing to do with the magazines or the "handling":
1.) I'm not crazy about the oversized hoodscoop or wing...I think the WRX's are more proportional IMHO.
2.) Along with the "good" attention, you will have to be careful about the "bad" attention it will get.
3.) If you change anything from stock on the STi and it's not completely reversible and undetectible, your "STi resale value" will get hurt to various degrees depending on what you do to it.
4.) Because of the limited number of STi's and the US only specs, mods for the 2.5 will either be hard to come by, VERY expensive, or BOTH.
5.) Since I qualify for the Subaru VIP program, the price difference for a 2004 WRX for me after taxes is close to $9K with a couple of minor options the STi doesn't have stock.
6.) Modding the WRX will be more "fulfilling" and enjoyable than buying the STi just for the performance difference. (again IMHO)
7.) The STi will always have an extra 200 lbs. to carry around.
I still think the STi is great for what it is, a powerful, "wow" factor, attention getting car that I'm sure is a blast to drive. The WRX is just a better package in my case. But that's just me......YMMV.....especially depending on your reasons and motives for buying the STi....

good point. very good perspective. i totally agree. you can easily get a stock wrx faster than the sti and for a lot cheaper too. the only downside would be there wouldn't be a warranty for it. i also forgot to mention about the sti vs evo. EVO IS HAS WON THE WRC WAY MORE THAN ANY SUBARU!! and i know the evo they are selling isn't the same as the rally car, BUT it is still the same basic engine and such, so...that has to account for something. i know i am goign to take a lot of **** for saying that but still...its true

yes it is true that u can easily upgrade the WRX to be faster than the STi. and it is true than u can easily upgrade the STi to be faster than the upgraded WRX. hope u guys still see that the STi is still on top. but the point im saying is i would be JUST as happy owning the new 04 WRX if i can't get an STi. because the WRX is such a beautiful piece of machinery and so much potential.

I suspect that most STi owners will not be running out to void their warranties. Besides, I never said the STi can't be made even faster, just nowhere near as cost effective, and that's only once mods are available for it. Regardless of it being a WRX or an STi most of us have a finite performance goal which is well within reach using either version.
Although it would be somewhat silly to buy an STi to go right into modding it and voiding the warranty on it given it's stock power advantage, I'm sure there will be a few out there that will do it just for "bragging rights". I just hope they plan on keeping the car indefinitely or it's for track use, because their resale value is going to drop through the floor.
I'm sure most people looking to buy a used STi in a year or two won't be looking for cars that have had the warranty voided already, unless the cost of the mods to the original owner are "expendable" and the buyer just doesn't care about the "collector value".
Then again, my plans for my upcoming 2004 WRX are long term and progressive over time so I definitely will not be keeping it stock.
WRX or STi.....it's all good!

the STi should come with many optional mods right? i mean unless its like a porche GT2 where its comes raced out stock anyways and no more room for upgrades.. that might be how the STi is..cause i mean its built for performance.. you woudn't want to change the stock intake manifold for it may already be the best manifold for it?...

it won't be maxed out...guarantee! its really hard to max a car out...especially a 30k one. not to mention it is a 2.5 only running 14.5 psi. while the evo runs 19psi. I AM NOT COMPARING IT TO THE EVO!! DO NOT START AN EVO STI COMPARISON!! i am just saying that the 2.5 can run so much more boost and such. not to mention you can always get a front mount on any wrx. sooooo....htere will always be mods. but they will be a lot more expensive than the stock wrx!

i cant believe the sport compact car chose the evo over the STi. its not like the STi handles that poorly...o wells sine they chose the evo i have respect for it. i just dont understand why would they chose a car with the slower 0-60 and slower 1/4. yes the evo out handles the sti.. but not as much as the sti out guns the evo.. hmm i dont get it. anyways.. i still like the sti better even though SCC chose the evo over the sti. so disapointing. im still buying the sti over the evo no matter wat. muahahahahahaa
seriously how much worse can the STi handling be? i guess im stubborn but ima take the subaru awd over mitsubishi
