read me, sick of negative comments about sti
Please, sick of all the bad talk about the STI. I use to dream of having a EVO before they came to the states. The only reason I bought a WRX is because it was the first. When I first drove it I remember thinking what is this thing; who could build such a car for $24,000. I had a grin from ear to ear. The feel was unlike anything ever. It reminded me of Porsche-like. The sound of that flat 4 rumble. The feel of the of that turbo spooling. amazing!!!!.
You see I grew up with muscle cars, so how I got into imports is beyond me, but I guess it was that supra i use to have. I thought that was the the ultimate sports car. So needless to say, I drove home with a new WRX that day. After a few mods, full exhaust, intake, mbc., the car started to come to life. The sound that emitted from the tip of that muffler behind it was unlike anything else I've ever heard. People would stare and say to themselves, "What is that thing making that sound? Isn't that supposed to be a family compact?" Then one day I got STI motor mounts and tranny mounts. When I drove to the first stop sign after install, I began to notice a rumble in the steering wheel; I could feel it in my gut, and the car began to shake just a little bit. It brought me back to 10 years ago. My friend had a '71 'Cuda. It had a similar feel to it; the feel of TORQUE!!! But WTF, this was a four-cylinder. And that's the difference from the EVO, the feeling of power.
Automobile Magazine measures the STI's acceleration peak at .98 Gs. That's almost one full G from a factory four-cylinder. That is just awesome. I had been in a lot of powerful Mitsubishis and none of them ever had that feeling of power. Not to mention the handling, braking, and the mass amounts of traction. You will never get that feeling with a Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, etc.... So I pick the STI over the EVO any day.
Well, that's my story, Thomas
Automobile June 2003:
"The Mitsubishi EVO also has disc brakes large enough for family-style dining, but the overall sophistication of the car relative to the STI is slightly lower."
"The STI is anything less than a down-right amazing car. It's arguably more complete than any race-bred road car in history."
Any comments?

Its all in what you want and what floats your woody. Its your money and just buy what you want! I would not let any negativity bias your decision making. You are the one that has drive and live with it.
I like the looks of the EVO too but i love the hood scoop on the STI. I'm not saying the EVO is a bad car but I like that rumble of that beautifull flat four. Nothing sounds that way. Com'on really are'nt we all just a little tired of that honda type in-line 4 sound I know I am. When you hear a wrx you know it. It's sweet music to the ears!! The EVO is a good sports car by all means!! but the STI is just a little more furious (it feels like it has more *****). and the feeling of the driving exprence is 50% of owning it. I think the STI is the both a little bit big v-8 like but new age technology all in one bad *** package. you dsm guys have fun with your EVO but be sharp and listen for that flat four rumble.

sad thing now is that the evo owners are beginning to really have issues with thier trannys. Mitz was replacing them, but has stopped cause the problem is not going away with that solution. Just keeps coming back after a few miles. Will be interesting to see what mitz ends up doing to solve this issue. They are also turning a blind eye to the issues with the carbon fiber wing bubbles. Saying it is normal in an official TSB. I don't wish ill will on anyone but I knew mitz quality from a long time ago which is why I wouldnt buy an mitz. Suby's had problems with their trannys when they first came over.. but in General suby's have always been more reliable.

I think alot of older folks (30+ yrs/old) who have been around cars and/or in the scenece since before Vin Diesel or Eminem had careers recall that Mitsu has never had a reputation for quality or reliable products. Hence their _need_ to go with a full coverage waranty and deep dealer dincentives and zero % financing to essentially buy their way into the market.
Yeah, okay they are the fastest growing import today but so what...the Taurus at one time was the fastest selling four door and look what incentives got it, a near zero resale value and a reputation as a taxi/rental/cheap family car.
Proof of this for Mitsu are their wholesale resale values. Take a look at the depreciation hit any of their models take after just one year...it ain't pretty.
I had posted this same statement several months ago at NASIOC and folks clowned me like I didn't know what I was talking about. And they went on about their almight 4G63 motors and how relaiable it is. Well great, but a car is a lot more than a decade old design iron block and a pair of aluminum heads recylced from a model 5 years back.
Just because Mitsu. is offering a full warranty on their cars doesn't mean they will cover everything. They have the right to refuse any work/item they deem fit...and the guess who's left holding the bag, Joe Customer. The same thing happened/happens over at your local Audi dealer too. Just ask around.
I'd rather spend my money on a vehicle that I know is built right the first time and has a _long_ history of requiring minimal maint. and is extremely reliable even if it a few seconds slower in top speed or handles on a track a few 10ths of a second slower.
For every slow handling STi on the road there will be three EVO's parked in the service bay awaiting warranty approval and rehab.
I'd rather be on the road having fun with my 'slow' STi than sitting home making posts on EvolutinM.net about how my 'fast' EVO is in the shop again. To think the EVo has only been on the road something like 90 days and yet they are dropping like flys. No wonder I have yet to see one on the road....they're all in the shop.
Caveat Emptor...

Folks first excused it away as an idler gear issue with "rattling" when the trans was in neutral. Now I ask, how many other stock MT cars do you know of that make audible rattling and chattering noises? Enough so much that a large number of owners are asking each other; "Hey, does your car make this weird noise"?
Beyond that folks are having problems getting their car into and out of gear (2nd & 5th). Thats is a performance hinderance and is flat dangerous. Then you got folks wondering why their clutches are buring out in 5K miles or less. Some claim to have dumped the clutch a few times and raced the car but others have claimed thay just picked the car up from the dealer (one guy had only 50 miles on his odo!) and were still in 'break in' mode and started having clutch chatter and/or slippage problems.
Not even the infamous premature clutch wear complaints of M5 owners were this bad and at least their clutch lasted 15-20K miles of hard use (and thats from a near 4K lb 394HP V8!).
I won't even go into the bubble (delamination) issues of the rear CF wings or the shoddy overall build quailty issues folks have reported. Miscellaneous squeaks & rattles galore, all from a brand new $30K+ car! And good luck getting a service appt. with your local dealer as the lines are long and full. Not to mention you have to then go to battle with your service rep to get anythign warranted...only to be hit with a TSB from Mitsu claiming these broken & squeaky cars are aging normaly.
Don't believe a word I say though. Do your own home work and check around. Go surf the EVO user forums and see whats on their minds...they generally aren't to happy.
