e36 M3 or STI
I've put 40K on a 98 M3 Sedan with an ecu upgrade, CAI, Zex NOS kit, Eiback springs and 18's w/SO3's The car is quick, fun, sounds sweet and has been 100% reliable.
I like the 300/300 rating of the STI. So I dropped by a Subaru dealer to drive a WRX just to get a preview of what an STI will offer. The WRX seemed slow and quiet. To be fair, I only drove it about 5 miles. I did get my name on the waiting list at Irvine Subaru. Unfortunately, there are over 100 names on the list before mine.
My M3 is no rocket, but when the NOS is on, I have not been beaten by an S4 (4 confrontations) nor a WRX (about 10 confrontations). I'll sell my '98 M3 and buy a STI if the STI can provide the the same satisfaction i find in my M3.

You're not the only Audi convert. I've currently got a 2001 A4 1.8T. I'm #5 for a black STi at my local dealer. I had been planning on upgrading to the new S4 when it came out, but I was disappointed by the average performance for the price point and also the lack of technology - SMG type shifting, bi-xenons, NAV. I can live with a little cheaper feeling interior for that much performance at a much more affordable price. Plus I love the feel of a turbo, and the six speed with those short throws should make the STi a blast.
I'm probably going to get rid of the spoiler, stickers, and badging though. I'm a bigger fan of stealth performance than the flamboyant boy-racer look.
And from the looks of it, the interior of the STi is very nice looking on its own, albeit it is much more sport than luxury, it doesn't look as bad as a lot of other cheap Japanese interiors.

Prodirve modded US-STi
If 944 Turbo Guy's inside scoop on a 400 bhp US-spec STi (modded by Prodrive) is accurate, then we should all be trembling in eager anticipation...........now that would be something to behold and, given Prodrive's exemplary reputation, it shouldn't be too much of a liability......
