How are you guys breakin in your STi's??
i guess i'm asking this question bc i've been hearing different things from different people...some have said to take it easy till about the 500 miles, meaning keep it under 4,000rpms and about half throttle...once the miles expire then let it loose...the chief mechanic at my Subaru dealer from where i got my STi told me to vary the rpm's in every gear but don't stay on any rev point too long...he said i can take it up to 5,000 rpms but no wide open throttle for the 1st 1000 miles and then come in and get another oil change... my friends tell me that i don't have to change my oil bc the break in oil from the factory was put in the STi for me to drive till the first recommended oil change which according to the manual is 3750...so what is the rule of thumb for breakin in your STi cause i dont' want to have any regrets...i'd rather be safe then sorry. for now i've been driving my STi for the past 2 days, varying the rpm level on each gear up to 4,000 rpm at most at minimal to half throttle...and i plan to drive like this till first 1000 and then change my oil...so for the rest of you guys who have your STi's already...what would you recommend for the best way to break it in and why?? thanks, Ghost
PS- breakin is such torture...having to shift every gear at 4,000 if not before is a major tease and the rev needle just jumps up so quickly, i feel like i'm constantly shifting!!

you can call 1-800-Subaru3 and they will tell you how to break it in. for my wrx they said like 1000 miles, under 5000rpm, don't drive at a constant speed, meaning no cruise control(i don't know if the STi has that) and get your oil changed at 1000. but it maybe different and i could be wrong on the miles i don't really remember to well. but call them they will tell you. they also said new cars don't need to be broken in as well as old ones cause of the new metals and such. ALSO! ever gone on a test drive in a WRX. the dealers i had told us to beat on it. and i know from people that work at dealerships, the cars get beat on a lot. meaning its probably already broken.....in

I picked up my STi last Wednesday. I plan just to drive it gently for the first 1000 miles (<4000 rpm). The Subaru guys at my dealer said the oil should be fine for 3000 miles (I was offering them business to change it at 1000. They declined).
My only lapse was when test driving it at the dealer before signing on the dotted. I turned the bend out the shop and pressed the gas. Before I knew what was happening I was at 5500rpm in 2nd and a little surprised. The sales guy giggled. Apparently I was the first customer to test drive actually drive an STi. They had not allowed the spotty 18 year olds who had swamped the place the afternoon before to test them for obvious reasons.
I know what you mean about changing at 4000 rpm. Moving from traffic lights requires constant hand and clutch foot motion because the box ratios are so close.
Only another 600 miles to go.

thanks guys for the replies...yeah...i've been varying my speed and revs, but keeping it under 4,000...my mechanic friend told me to try to rev throughout the entire powerband without redlining and wide open throttle...he also told me to change the oil at 500 miles but i think i'm just going to change it at 1,000. from 1,000 i'll gradually start going over 4,000 to 7,000.
