Do you really need to break the car in?
I pretty much keep my RPMs below 4k. But every now and then, i will exceed that a little bit. Maybe 5k-5.5k, it won't hurt your engine one bit. Its not a rule written in stone that if you take your new engine past 4k, its gonna hurt it. Its actually better if you vary the RPMs often and an occassional 6K hit won't damage anything.

My understanding is that most engines are run for a certain number of hours at the factory, and come "pre broken in" when the first owner gets the car so a break in period is totally unneeded. This has been done the last couple of decades to cars and trucks. Just my 2 cents. That said I would still err on the side of caution and break in for 1000 miles.
Why is no one worried about the rest of the car? Transmissions, brakes, steering: all of these parts need to "work in", to seat and seal properly. My WRZ now has 10K miles and I am just at the point of long high speed runs (when I can find the space) and the occassional fun of blowing away some teenager in a low whee Civic with an ugly sounding muffler. ps: I am well past voting age: my first car was a highly modified (are you ready?) Packard 120 of about 1940 vintage. There are time when I wish I still had that car, but junked it after about 65K. That was about all you could get, driving the way I did.

Doesn't anyone read anymore. Your dealer should have told you to go home and read the manual if he was any good, and you should have listened to him. In the manual on page 8-2 it discusses new vehicle break-in driving and on 11-43 breaking in the brake pads and linings.

Engines come "broken in" from the factory just like they are "tuned to the limit". They do just enough to get it out the door hassle free. Trust me though. If you do rev the hell out of it on the way out of the lot, not only is he gonna be your best friend but your gonna pay for it. IF you rev the hell out of it before the suggested break in is done I would not be surprised to see them say that you didn't follow the manual instructions and make you pay for any work needed and possibly void your warranty because you were "racing". For 1000 miles is it REALLY worth risking it.
