Car Info: dream car Subaru STi
basically, you are right u need to rev it up slowly, its best to break it in by bringing up the rpms nice n slow, because the pistons need to mold the cylinders into shape, thats breaking it in, its not good to full throttle ur car when its under 1000miles because u still have factory oil and metal shaving inside ur engine, so if u drive it hard with factory oil which isnt fully synthetic, itll wear out the inside of ur cylinders more, basically its like this, you want to mold the inside of your engine to be the most perfect fit for your pistons, its not good to drive it hard at all, after 1000 its pretty much ok to start giving it more throttle but before that, its best to bring up the rpms very slowy and u can feel ur engines pistons shaping the inside slowly. u must feel the engine, be one with the engine.
the better shaped inside, the better fit of the cylinders around the pistons, makes the a better more powerful engine in the long run. its very slight but it matters, even though the cylinders are always gona be nicely fitted around the pistons, everyone will still have slight variations of how different the mold is and that slightness willl matter a lot in the long run.

Synthetic does no better at protecting against metal parts in the oil the Dino, that's the oil filters job. Main reason for breakin is the stablization of all the alloy that have been cast and machine and forged causing stress and weakening the metals. Also to seat the rings and allow cylinders to wear in and not be thermally expanded and thus worn excessively causing different cylinder presures. Still not as important as it used to be though.

Paranoia is a good thing... sometimes.

Do not use synthetic oils? So I'd have to drain the thing at the dealership and tell them to add Petro based oil...fine that is not an issue for me, but I want to be certain I'm not following the advice of a few loons who just want to post crap so they appear Knowledgeable.

1. I very seriously doubt that STi's are delivered with synthetic oil. I don't know of any way to check that but I'll look in the manual and find out as soon as I get out of work.
2. You're not gonna "screw you engine up" unless you start redlining it right out the dealership and start doing donuts WOT in the cul-de-sac at the end of the street you live...
These are modern engines, you may have to treat them with care the first 1k but they're not gonna turn into mush if you pull above 4k here and there in a controlled fashion. Remember this is a reinforced block with forged pistons, it's not made of silly putty. So RTFM and keep it under 4k as a general rule then slowly start building up on it.
And never forget the importance of what you can hear and smell. Does the engine sound smooth as you pull into 4k and above or does it sound like an American Idol episode. Are you getting that new car smell or that burnt smell, you know the one that smells like your hoodscoop just sucked in road-kill.
Just use your common sense man.

When it comes to my money you are damn skippy I'll be paranoid about the friggin thing. As for common sense, I never said I was going to bring it to a launch pad and send it to Mars. I just want to know the most efficient break in practice. Of course it never hurts to get more info if someone here on the boards knows.
