Automobile: WRX STi battles Evo
"But if the point of these cars is to serve the most committed and crazed of wheelmen, then the Evo has the edge. It's raw. It's punishing."
I think this statment is a load of ****. Look at the numbers.
Sense when is "buffing the car of its many rough edges" a con?
So the Sti doesn't have a cheech and chong steering wheel, and it's not running at a-turbo-life-of-six-months 19 psi. But, this makes the Evo "feel faster." Even thou the Sti has a quiet, steady engine, The sling shot effect ought to do nicley when the Evo is on the edge of braking lose on a tight corner. This car is nearly tweeked out in the turbo department. The STi has leaps and bounds of power above it's perfect 14.5 boost level. Have you seen the Evo's interior? It's pure ****. I forgot to tell ya'll
that "the Evo's powertrain is far feistier." The Evo lacks a front LSD and a driver controled center LSD (or purly auto). This comparison is just a simple case of people favoring the underdog.
I hope someone in the Oklahoma City area drives their Evo alot,
that way it won't take me long to run the **** out of their car until only a little blue dot appears then slow down, and I'll be damned if I won't do it again! Bottom line is, buy what you want
but in America, Sti's will always rule over Evo's.

Some of you need to accept the fact that the Evo is a nice car. You're accusing some mag of pulling for the underdog while obviously showing a bias yourself.
Until you drive both cars yourself, maybe you should save all of the homer-laden anti-Evo talk. Then again, I doubt many dealerships are turning over keys to 16 year-olds for test drives. Anyways, if it's pushing the STi to be a better car that is a GOOD thing.
Not to mention, all this "my car rules!" talk smacks of exaggerated, adolescent pride.

I'm originally from the UK, and this STi vs Evo battle has been raging long and hard over there (many, many years). In virtually all the iterations of each car (including the 22B) the Evo has generally come out on top as being the best "drivers car"....whatever that means......in reality, it's more of a track oriented machine with super-quick steering and uncompromising chassis set-up (for the street that is).
I think many people expected the USDM STi to be not only quicker, but also to out-handle the USDM Evo, simply because the Evo makes-do without the AYC etc. and the Suby gets the DCCD etc. Well, a lot of the handling is subjective, not quantitative like acceleration (apart from lateral Gs), but I tend to believe it when the vast majority of magazine reviewers/testers (they drive cars for a living you know) state that the Evo is a better handler.
I also realise that 0-60 and 1/4 mile times can be bogus (sort of) just because of the cars gearing etc., hence it's no surprise that based on these metrics only the Evo performs similarly to the STi.......BUT, in general day-to-day driving, the better bhp/torque-to-weight ratio of the STi coupled with its shorter-ratio 6-speed box means it will be definitely be quicker in most circumstances, stock-for-stock..........
Both have their pros and cons, and it's been said a million times before it probably comes down to personal preference. Now if you intend to mod......that's a whole different can of worms.

i think that the STi is still better than EVO although they are quite close.. because i have seen many japanese racing videos of the eVO vs STi and the STi always smokes the EVO off the launch. and i mean SMOKES, but those are jus the videos i saw so i dont know about us drivers vs pro japanese racers

Sorry about all of the negativity. I'd just got done reading this article and vented abit. The fact that the Sti has this level of competition is wonderful. I just like to have the feeling that I'll be paying 32,500 for the best all around compact sports car (street and track). When tests come out with the Evo on top it makes me angry because I am a Subaru fan, and a WRX owner. I'd like the Sti to receive all the glory that it should. In my opinion, Sti did not get that deserved oportunity that it should have in this particular testing. Also, I'm 24, and the Sti does rule to me!

Mitsubishi dealer called on monday and said that a sales man had kept an evo and wanted to know if I'd like to see and test drive on wednsday. I had stopped in to glance at one a month ago. This should give me some clarification on what the evo is about. The dealer also gets the chance to try and persuade me into trading my WRX in. This will probably be more interesting than the test drive
!
the evolution has a history in japan much like subaru has a history in japan and both cars have a great history in the rally circuit. the evolution VI was by far the best car built out of all the evolution series cars. it was engineered to perfection, especially the Tommi Makinen version. now, subaru also had their hands on some pretty awesome cars like the 22B, which is by far their best car made in production. i mean this car was one of the fastest 4-cyl. cars produced and all handmade by STi. i guess the S202 doesn't fall very far from the no. 1 spot also. so in the overally aspect, both the evolution and the STi's are both great cars and as someone has stated, it matters what you want. i think that the better advantage the evolution has is it's twin-scroll turbo set-up, which gives it a bit more acceleration coming out of turns. the STi's in japan have this same set-up. i'm thinking of swapping that motor into my car soon.

well ive seen the japan drag racing videos of their new STi vs. their new EVO ... and boy o boy did the STi smoke the EVO off the line baby. wad u expect the Sti gots 300lbs/ft of torque at 4000rpm! ooooo baby.... ive made my decision on what to get based on the videos, specs info.... my loyalty, love, and great everlasting appreciation for the little brother WRX. HERE I COME BIG BROTHER OF THE WRX!!! =)
ALSO... wat i love. subaru WRX's genetics.. horizontally opposed 4 cylinder boxer motor. the better species =) its designed that way for one reason and that is to keep low to the ground, superior center of gravity, superior handling. safest CAR to drive in my opinion. itll keep u alive in the most desperate of time fellow racers. trust me it unlike the 4cylinders in honda's and mistubishi's
